Back injury
Are you talking about Muncie?
Sorry to hear about your back, hope you can make it to the race. It'll be my first HIM also.

Yes, Muncie is the race I'm training for.
Dude that sux sorry man...
A number of years ago a neurosurgeon wanted to remove the disc in my back. That idea really freaked me out. Someone put me onto a really good chiropractor. It's been 7 years, I start and stop with the Chiropractor as I feel necessary.
Best money I've every spent.
Of course a regular Dr would be prescribing anti-inflammatory meds. I'm sure those help as well.
I can still imagine that back pain.
Hope you heal up quickly, Good Luck
Ya, that stinks - hope a few days of rest helps.

I'm so sorry! I hope it feels better soon!
My husband lived for 15 years with a rupture between L4 and L5. Managed it over that time through occassional chiro visits, good luck, and running (of all things). Last summer though it got so bad that he couldn't sit, lie down, sleep, or do much of anything without massive amounts of pain down his legs as you've described. He tried to keep pushing through but after three weeks of concentrated and excruciating pain, which even got to the point that he wasn't able to work full days, went to a Dr who referred him to one of the best neurosurgeons in town. The Neuro was conservative in his recommendations, but educated us on what the microsurgury technology offers in terms of removing the material that is pressing on the sciatic nerve (which runs down your legs). We weren't thrilled about the notion of back surgery, but it turns out that was the best thing we ever did.
He had the surgery on 6/27/06, was on his commuter bike within 1.5 months (albeit slowly and with little power), on a snowboard within 6 months, and this summer back to mountain biking, road riding, and running. No pain, no stiffness, no more worries. Just about a 1 inch scar in the small of his back is all that's left.
I'm not saying this is for everyone. In fact we tend to be over the top in terms of natural remedies vs. traditional ones, and we resisted with all we could for as long as we could. But for him, the pain just ended up impacting his quality of life so severely that we ended up deciding to try it.
Depending on how bad this gets for you, it will be important to research and consider all of your options. So I thought I'd share our story of what was scary at the time but that had a very happy ending.
Take care of yourself.
It's definite, my degenerative disk will keep me out of the Muncie HIM. I've been on steroids since Friday and still haven't seen much improvement. This is something I've had for approx. 20 years. Thankfully it only crops up every couple of years and lasts for a week or so. It's still not bad enough for surgery so I just live with it.
I guess it's better it went bad now instead of halfway through the swim! I'm just annoyed that the deadline is passed to transfer to next year so I'm out my entry fee.
Hopefully you'll improve in the next few weeks and can still get yourself into a later season race without pain. Keep your spirits up in the meantime!

Sorry about your back issue...that sucks after putting in soo much work and effort.
I live in Muncie and I'm lucky because the race course is where I train all the time. Let me warn 1st timers that the run course is very hilly...especially the last 3 miles. Last year was my 1st 1/2 IM at the Muncie Endurathon, and it was blistering hot. The run really kicked my butt. But the forecast has a cold front coming through the end of this week with temps in the upper 70's, low humidity, and a North wind...........yea!!!! I swam across the resovoir last Sat (2600 yards there and back) The water temp was a very warm 84 degrees.
Any one have any questions about Muncie, let me know. The Muncie Endurathon is the longest running 1/2 IM in the world.

That's a bummer, sorry to hear about it. Where in Indy are you? Maybe we could do some training sometime in the future.

Hey, I was a Titan too, only by then it was a middle school.
Hey man what I did one time when a deployment was affecting a race was write them a big long letter and some times you can get enough sympathy to still get a transfer. It is worth a shot dude...

After months of training for my first HIM distance tri. the degenerative disk in my back has chosen now to flare up. This is especially annoying as the race is on the 14th and I'm in my taper phase. Right now I can't stand-up straight and have pain radiating down both legs. Today was to be my last longer run but that's not going to happen. I'll give it a couple of days rest and see what happens but as of now I'm not real confident about making the race.
I'm not really looking for sympathy....I just needed to complain.
Oh well, I guess it could always be worse.
