Changes are a brewing for the new Triathlon One O One series. The inaugural Triathlon One O One event scheduled to take place in Halifax, Nova Scotia in 2007 has been postponed until 2008. The event was originally scheduled to take place on Sunday, September 2, 2007 but has now been rescheduled for Sunday, August 31, 2008. It was stated in the press release that the postponement was a result of the recent resignation of the local race director.

I too was looking at the race as a warm up for IMFL this year. Bummer, I guess I have to find another race now...

The full press release is here: http://www.trifuel.com/news/2007/07/02/triathlon-one-o-one-halifax-postponed-to-august-2008

interestng how they say postponed to August 2008, isn't that just cancelled? my understanding is they've been having a hard time getting registrations, thus the new race distances. Halifax cancelled due to the race director leaving?

I really hoped it would be a success, but they are struggling. too many races out there and they try to put them at the same times as other big/popular races.

I think the race had great options for a refund as a result of canceling. It seems like they are trying. Maybe it's just bad luck for them so far. At least, I hope so since I'm signed up for Woodlands and since I'd love to see that distance survive :)

As a halifax resident this was a really big disappointment, I ride the course every week as part of my long ride and it is one of the most scenic bike courses around.

The new distance was appealing as well as a nice step before an ironman.

We will see what happends next year I guess

The One O One series is an awesome distance and it's good to see an international (Ok, North American) challenge to Ironman, Inc. dominance in the sport.

But they've made some easily avoidable mistakes.
1) Nobody seemed to know about it. When I did Clearlake none of the tri people I know ever even heard of it. Most are insulated within their local teams and for some reason word just didn't get down to the 'cell' level.
2) How about some non-pro $$$? Throwing $50K out to Pros will get 10 pros to show up, but throwing out $5k to amateurs will boost registrations five fold.
3) The Name: One O One. I couldn't figure out what it meant. One On One (one vs. one); is the "O" supposed to be an "OH?" It doesn't help that "One On One" is slang for masturbation, either. Then I finally figured it out a couple weeks later--101 miles. Duh. Well...everyone else I knew asked what's up with the name and couldn't figure it out at first either.

And another thing--when someone completes an Ironman, they are an Ironman. Part of the massive popularity of the IM brand has to do with the fact that what's attracting people to the full distance is that they want to be an "Ironman". If you do a Sprint triathlon--you're a triathlete. If you crank out a 1/2 IM, you're a triathlete....if you do a One O One or the BAM or Escape from the Rock, you're a triathlete. But when you do 140.6 miles you're an Ironman. It may be vain, but it's true and dammit it does sound cool. Genius marketing really. When someone finishes a One O One race they're a 'person who completed a One O One Tri." Doesn't roll off the tongue and it doesn't sound at all bad ass. When you go through something as torturous as a 100+ mile human powered race, ya kind of want to take on a moniker....

The race held enough excitement for me that I registered my wife and myself at the original fee of $300. The round trip ferry ride from Portland,Me. to Yarmouth,NS for us and the car was $598 plus meals and a few days at the hotel I figured it was still a deal for a quality long course race.
When the entry fee was reduced to $150 and those that paid $300 were given the "option" to recieve some tri clothing it was pretty apparent to me that this was doomed. And the nails were in the coffin when the tri clothing never became available via the online website store.
Friday I got half of the original registration fee back in a check. Correspondence has been sent asking for an explanation and that will be posted here.
If Global Multi Sport LLC d/b/a Tri One O One makes good on their promises that information should be shared so the tri community knows these folks are honorable. Equally, if they are not responsible, that should be made known.
