Fund Raising for Race Registration - Ethical?
If you want to raise money for charity then do it. If you do an event with an organization they will use a portion of your fund to cover your race fees.
To raise money just to cover your fees is pretty bush league. I wouldn't call it unethical but I would call it tacky.

Depends on how you present it.
If telling people that it is for a charity then that would be very misleading.
Asking friends to help you out to offset your costs then that is honest and they know what the $ is for.

it's called sponsorship. what do people get out paying for you? donating to a charity they know the money is at least in part spent on the charity's cause and a tax deduction. what do they get if they pay your way?

Ditto.....
The only way I would think of that being ok is if your "donants" are your parents man!
I don´t know..... it seems for me like something I would never give money for. even if you raised double the registration cost and donate half..... I wouldn´t feel comfortable.
Nothing against your idea.........just giving you my honest answer.

One suggestion would be to talk to your employer or a business (preferably where you know someone) and tell them in exchange for taking care of your race fees you will promise to race and train in a jersey/shirt with the company's name on it. This way it's not so much like you are begging but have something to offer in return.

that is what Sponsorship is pretty much but to put it under a false guise is questionable.
You can definitely ask for contributions towards your entry to XYZ race and you should describe the race, its history, its beneficiary (the charity) and tell your would be contributors your long term goals if any. Tell them it is part of your five-year plan to qualify for the World Age Group Championships or Kona (if true)
but DO NOT mis-represent any part of it.
This is how up-and-coming athletes nobody has ever heard of, get started. They even do up resumes with photos and canvass companies for longer term contributions to help fund their training.
My company has been approached by aspiring Olympians who have had only modest results at local races but who are ambitious about making the Canadian Olympic Team in minor sports like biathlon which has nearly zero exposure or corporate support.
Unlike downhill ski racing which is way mo' sexy to the big Corporations.
I got a $100 towards my own 2007 IMC entry fee from a local business and I'm not anywhere near winning anything! They just want to be part of something. I offered to wear their logo on my helmet or even to wear a running singlet with their company name on it. It would be kinda cool I think:

You don't ask you don't get.
well, sometimes you even get even if you don't ask, so ask already.
what have you got to lose?

This is kind of how I was thinking of doing it. Just friends/family. Maybe asking for $5 or 10 a person. I'm really getting into Triathlons, but being a young guy in an expensive sport is killing me! I just got the idea because I gave a friend $10 when he was collecting money for a charity race a few months ago.
Good luck with it, make 'em proud!

I was wondering if anyone has fund-raised for race registration. Race registration can be expensive! I was thinking that since most triathlons benefit a charity, would it be unethical for me to ask for donations to go towards registration? It's kind of selfish on my part, but I figure it also would benefit the charity that received a portion of the charity. Just looking for input.
