Blood Work
I personally get blood work done every other year while I am getting a physical done. Like anything, your body is constantly changing and certain things can be magnified while training especially during IM training because of the duration of the workouts. I'm not a doctor but I always go to the side it's better to know for sure than to just figure everything is okay. Good luck on your training!
Ouch, My everything!
I'm 31, have no underlying problems. I have it done once a year. They have come across things that I would not have known otherwise. It's good to have it done regularly.
I am preparing for my first IM and a trainer at the local gym suggested yesterday that I get some blood work done to make sure I am getting the proper nutrients and everything is good to go. I have absolutely no health issues and feel great with the increased training schedule. The trainer just suggested this as a routine check and not as a result of any identified problems. Anyone else done this as a matter of routine in preparation for an IM or as part of their training as I have never heard of this? Seems a little extreme for a 40 year old with no previous history of problems.
From a medical point of view:
I would recomend any one, children, adults, elders, to have at least once a year if nothing is wrong, a complete blood workup, as a general rule of good Health Higiene.
As athlete even more important.
Endurance athletes my experience all sorts of abnormal things in the blood like:
Anemia
Electrolyte imbalances
Sings of infection or inflamation
Sings of decreased renal function
Just to name a few. Better to catch them early and correct them than waiting until things get difficult.
Do not think that because you are young and nothing is wrong you and you don´t need it?. If you are doing an IM,you are about to embark in the process of preparation for one of the most grueling and hard events on the planet.
I think your trainer is a very wise man suggesting you to get a complete blood work.

Thanks for all the good advice. I think I'll go out and get some blood work done!
If you haven't had everything tested how do you know for sure you don't have any health problems?
Just because you feel good doesn't mean someone is happening.
I am 29 years old and get a full comprehensive medical each year.
I'm getting some done today, after this thread reminded me it's important. I tend to shy away from docs. Thanks!

Well I'm starting to have more faith... my new doc is awesome! He thinks it's great that I exercise and that I only take meds when I really really can't deal with how I feel (or am really sick). I was just tired of docs that thought I was crazy (for exercising a lot) and trying to avoid being always on meds (such as for allergies).
