Greetings. My first sprint is in 7 days, and I am beginning to panic a bit. I have been training for the event for 16 weeks, but I have some misgivings about the choices I have made in terms of gear in an effort to do this thing on the cheap. Also, it just got warm enough for open water swims in Madison, WI, so I'll only have a few of those under my belt on race day. I'm a runner, so I don't have a lot invested in bike or swimming apparel/gear. I plan to swim in a good ole' fashioned one-piece Speedo and bike and run in lightly padded cycling shorts (with the suit underneath). Oh, and did I mention my bike is a trek multi-sport with road tires? Yep. I'm sitting straight up. I'm not in it to win, but just to have fun and see what I think of the tri scene. If I love it, then I'll start investing in the fancy stuff. Any advice, reassurance, or chastising welcome.

I wouldnt sweat the bike on the equipment end. You wont be the fastest, but thats ok. The road tires are a good choice and you can get yourself through several events in this manner.

I would rethink trying to pull bike shorts on after the swim. Try it in practice and you'll see why. You will lose several minutes trying to squeeze em on.

Life is short. Play hard and get dirty doing it.

True. Is it possible to swim in the bike shorts?

I think you can swim in the bike short, give it a try and see how it goes before the race. If you can't you may be better off just pulling on a pair of running shorts that aren't too tight.

Also, practice your transitions, lay everything out and go through it so you can see where to cut corners and just get a general feel for how it's going to be (i.e., getting any sand off your feet, putting socks on wet feet, etc.)

You will do just fine! I just did my first race since 2004 a couple of weeks ago and it went great. Practicing transitions helped me to not feel so flustered.

Also, if any one leg of the race doesn't go the way you planned, just leave it behind you in transition and focus on the next task. Being a runner I'm sure you'll finish the race feeling strong.

You'll be fine. You could definitely use the bike shorts throughout the race, most tri shorts are just bike shorts with a thin pad. GIve them a try in one of your swims. You're probably better to swim in those than to bike and run in the speedo.

i'm not the most experienced, but my advice would be to not worry about it. if you can complete the distances at a speed that leaves you feeling like you've given it your all, don't worry about your bike. As for the shorts issue-i wear the same lightweight soccer shorts for swimming, cycling and running - no padding at all. they resist the chlorine in the pool, they don't create a lot of drag, and they're not mad loose, or mad tight.

Since the tri is only a week away though, don't go using something you've never worn before - you could end up with some harsh chafing or something.

Good luck buddy.

Thanks to everyone for your responses. I also tracked down the other threads on these matters. I really appreciate the advice and support.

definitely don't worry about your bike, you'll see others on mtn/hybrids w/ skinny tires also. no sense dropping $1k+ on something if you're not sure you like the sport yet!
