Tri vs road bike for race
You probably see pictures of pros in ITU races where TT bikes are illegal. Tri bikes are almost always the best choice for non-drafting races. The only time I'd want to use a road bike instead would be if the course was extremely technical where the time spent slowing down through corners on a tri bike would make the split slower (which would be lots and lots of very high speed turns). I've never done Alcatraz, but a friend of mine told me a couple weeks ago that he wished that he had brought a road bike instead since there were a lot of 90 degree turns at the bottom of big hills.

Pros use road bikes because a) 90% of ITU races have made Tri bikes illegal and b) They are draft legal races, and the last thing you want is to be 5 inches off someone's wheel on your aero bars.

I did the Baja 70.3 a few weeks ago and I noticed that many used road bikes (I didn't) for better handling for the long technical descents/ascents. It definitely was a little sketchy on my TT bike. next year I will probably bring the roadie.
The more hilly the course...when you have to be "dancing on the pedals"...you'll want the road bike.

Man! How'd ya like to have his job? That most certainly would NOT suck!
(Phil Legget is the voice of the TDF as well as just about every other major race in the world. He has coined phrases like "He's dancing on the pedals." "Oh, those legs have gone!" "The rubber band has snapped." and others...)

I think I would rightly enjoy it in a most immodest way.

I competed in the Black Warrior Sprint tri in AL yesterday; BTW, great race. It was my 1st time doing the race so I had no intel on the bike course. Of course, I used my Trek TT bike with my Hed3 tri spoke wheels. The course was HILLY (a few long grinders and no flat sections) and I found myself constantly changing gears; even the front. How do you decide when to use your road bike w/race wheels? I see more pros using road bikes.
