Good luck to those in Ironman Coeur d'Alene tomorrow! I am sure we will have a good day except the 60% chance of Thundershowers at 5pm.

I'm signed up...in the wrong age group! Yikes. so anyway I'm waiting to see if they will switch me over...

I'm having a really hard time finding hotel rooms. Do you think they are all booked up already? Or is it just too far out to book 'em?

Nope, was really nice most all of the day. I little wind, but nothing I'd term windy.

The main thing was simply the temperature drop towards the evening...that hurt after the race.

Thanks. :)

It was an interesting day. The short is that I finished after my right knee gave out on the bike and I couldn't push with it. The long should hopefully be up in a bit today. A bit disappointing as I was on track for a sub 6 bike and a sub 12 race, but still managed to pull out a PR by just over 20 minutes somehow :D

I signed up for next year too...and I have to tell you I wish I hadn't the lodging situation is annoying. Every place seems to require a 5-7 night stay and they jack up the nightly price to like $400/night during the event. I was hoping to stay for 3 nights in CDA and then explore other parts of the region. One B&B even told me they do this because they can.

Any of you who were there this year have any advice on a place to stay that isn't going to take advantage of us?

I spectated. My girlfriend kicked ass and pulled a sub 12. The swim was crazy--medical people said they pulled 200 people out of the water (all alive)--and the announcer annouced 5 min. before the start that people had the option of doing a duathalon the chop was so bad. The lake is really shallow and wind (which was pretty strong) whipped the lake up into a frenzy. A normal time of 1:05 turned into a 1:10-1:15 due to the conditions.

The second leg of the bike was windy, too....and it got cold quickly once the sun set.

As for hotels--Spokane isn't that far away (where I stayed)--and neither is Post Falls. Both had plenty of rooms available for normal prices with no minimum stays. I signed up tonight for CDA 2008 and wouldn't hesitate staying in either city. Traffic to CDA from Spokane was predictable and took 40 min. Post Falls was about 20. Definitely worth considering when you end up saving $100-$300 a night. Best Western rules!

If you're spectating, check out the Centenial trail--it's a ~30 mile trail from Spokane to CDA and was about the only fun thing I could find to do outside of CDA.

AND--check out couchsurfing.com if you want to stay somewhere for really cheap....

Try Spokane maybe? --its about a 20 min drive, but may be better for you if you dont want to pay the 5 night min. I know Penticton started doing that too for IMC last year ---kinda a bummer.

If you don't mind a little bit of a drive (10 min or so) Post Falls is going to be your best bet. There are a couple other towns close as well that might have something: Liberty Hill and Hayden.

Otherwise, the best I can suggest if going through a home rental, though most require the 5-7 night deal. Another thing to keep in mind about the home rentals - in most cases you'll be liable for the full rental whether you take it or not, versus being able to cancel a hotel reservation/etc.

If it's just you, you can wait until last minute and see if anyone has a room open up in their house, or try to snag one of the free stays (a few families like to host an "in need" athlete each year). The mile141.com forums tended to have more openings closer to race time, and a forum specifically for lodging.

Thanks for the suggestions all. I ended up finding something reasonable that will let me stay for 2-3 nights for under $200/night...5-10 minute drive from the race. We'll see how that goes.

Hope you are enjoying your well deserved recovery and are savor the thrill of your amazing accomplishment!!

I didn't realize that a commute from Spokane would be so reasonable before a race; it's been a long time since I've been there. The whole point of doing CdA as my first Ironman was to turn it into a bit of a family reunion for those that live in Spokane. Lucky me, I doubt I'll have to pay for lodging now. Woot!

Spokane is about 40 min. away and Post Falls is about 20-25. And there's more than enough slow drivers (2 lane hwy) to make sure that you can't knock much time off your commute unless you're driving on the shoulder.

We have stayed the past 3 years in the Best Western in Liberty lake which 4 nights cost about 480 all in. Quite reasonable compared to the other spots in CDA. Good thing is that it's 20 minutes to the venue and 5 minutes from the Spokane Valley Mall (lots of eats and movie theatres). This year there was not the 3 on 3 like last year so there was more hotel availability. We left at 4:32am and arrived at 4:51am.
