Warsaw Optimist Race Report
June 23, 2007 Warsaw, IN
1/4mi swim, 13.5mi bike, 3mi run
~60 degrees F, humid, cloudy – light rain, 10 mph wind
I signed up for this race as a C race just for fun. I'm having fun doing different races on the other side of Chicago since I'm doing math research at Valparaiso U in Valparaiso, IN for the summer. For a pre-race snack, I drank a cup of my infinit recovery mix and half of a cup of green tea. I sipped on some of my regular infinit mix during the 1.5 hour drive. I arrived ridiculously early to this triathlon. After my previous two races (Johan’s TriFest, and the Tower Triathlon), I was glad to be early for once. I biked for about 20 min and ran for 10 as a warm-up.
The swim was an out and back around a boat in a pretty lake. The swim was wetsuit legal (75 degrees), but not many people wore them. My wave was Females under 30 and I think that I was the only one wearing one. This lake was REALLY full of weeds. The lake was shallow, so I touched them with my hands every single stroke. I was the first of my wave out of the water. I’d call it a good swim.
Swim: 7:10 ¼ mile swim, 150 yard run to t1 (13/459 Overall, 3/142 women)
I was happy with my T1. It’s my fastest t1 that includes wetsuit removal (QR Superfull). I thought that I would be ranked lower since I was one of only a few wearing a wetsuit. I guess that it didn’t matter. One of the legs got a little bit stuck (forgot the bodyglide), but not badly. I was pleased with my speed getting that thing off since it was my first wetsuit swim this season.
T1: 0:56 (11/459 Overall, 2/142 women)
I felt a lot better on the bike today that I did last week. It was a slightly rolling out and back course with 10 mph wind. However, looking at the results, I didn’t go any faster. It was raining a little bit and I think it was a bit windier, but not that much. At least I felt better. Only one person passed me on the bike (the old men started in front of us and one whom I passed on the swim must have passed me back). I really need to bike more…
Bike 40:47 13.5 mi (108/459 Overall, 7/142 women, 19.9mph)
My T2 was alright. It didn’t go quite as smoothly as last week and the transition area was about twice as big. I approached the dismount line with slightly too high of a speed and my legs barely kept up when they hit the ground. Any faster and I might have gone flying. There was a bit of traffic to get to my spot. I had to yell at a couple of guys to get out of my way.
T2: 0:43 (11/459 Overall, 2/142 women)
My run felt pretty good. For the first mile, I had a big air bubble in my stomach and felt a little uncomfortable, but that resolved itself. I think that I could have pushed myself a little bit harder, but it was a very good run for me. There was one pretty good hill on the course. No one passed me on the run, but the woman who finished right behind me (who is in my age group) ran an 18-something, so if it had been a 5k rather than 3 miles, perhaps. I think that this run breakthrough is here to stay. (Hopefully the corresponding bike slump will go away though) This was my first time to have a sub 7-min triathlon split pace. :-D
Run: 20:28 3 mi (46/459 Overall, 4/142 women, 6:49 pace!!)
They had the best post race food ever. They had chicken, pizza, and pasta in addition to a huge selection of fruit.
Total time: 1:10:04
31/459 Overall
4/142 Women
1/11 F20-24
I thought that it was interesting that all 3 women who beat me are all at least 16 years older than me, 2 of them more than 20 years older than me. They all started in the wave behind me, so I never saw them. I did know that they were there and based on last years results, I was just hoping that they wouldn't catch me. It was cool to be the first woman across the line though. I thought that this was a very well run race.
