I’m training for HIM and IM, but I would like to know what benefit you get by cross training with a Mountain bike.
Thank you for your help.

you still have the cyclical motion of a road bike but the only issue is your probably not maintaining a heart rate for a long time due to the technicality.

It's good for balance, and raises your alertness!
True, you might have some difficulty to stay in your target zone, but it gets better with time. If you get some hilly trails on the MTB, the road/tri bike rides will feel easy afterwards.
I see MTB as a great way to vary a bit. After all, you gotta have some fun! The only drawback: you'll feel very slow! :)

I love taking the MTB out sometimes, and think it is great cross-training. I have used it to replace one of my shorter weekday rides, but never to replace the long ride. It will help your handling skills, and help your climbing. It feels a bit odd sometimes to switch between the bikes (the different positions and different gearing) but I think it can be a great tool, and time :)

The question is, are you using your MTB on trails...or using your MTB on the road/hills/trail...
On trails I think riding the MTB does have some good effect. Handling skills, climbing, core work...
On the road, actually I think it's a great workout!...I put the biggest MTB chain ring I could get (44) with road tires, on my MTB and often go out and push it around on the road. 60 miles or more of cranking on a bike that is far heavier and has more rolling resistance than a road bike has all sorts of power possibilities...I don't do it all the time ...maybe once a week. It's great.

Trail riding is a GREAT way to crosstrain. It breaks the monotony of the road, improves bike handling skills and balance, and can provide a great lactate threshold, muscular endurance, or recovery workout, depending on where you ride.

I love my MTB and would give tris up long before giving up the dirt.

Life is short. Play hard and get dirty doing it.

I've been commuting on my MTB to school and work lately. Its only a couple of miles and its mostly on pavement but riding that tank has made me a stronger rider. I have been riding faster on my road bike since I've been commuting on the sherman tank.
