I have my third sprint Tri tomorrow morning but the weather is supposed to be stormy :( It hasn't rained in three weeks and decided to start today! I didn't know if A) they would run the race anyways as long as it's not lightening and B) if we do have it... any suggestions doing it in the rain? I know the roads will probably be slick and it is through a park so there are quite a few hills that i don't want to wipe out on. Any tips??

Most tri's are rain or shine, though on occasion a swim gets cancelled. In that case they'll sometimes make it a duathlon - run-bike-run.

Just be careful on the roads. And pay especial attention to metal and painted areas. Railroad track and storm drains are bad but the painted lines on the road can be like ice when wet.

All you can do is be extra cautious and maybe run your tires a couple PSI lower than normal.

Good luck.

Be careful and stay safe. A minute or two slower on the bike is better than nursing a month of road rash.

Lightening and very strong wind are what would typically cancel an event - tho it is up to the RD discretion.
Good advice below - stay off the paint - very slippery. Take a bit more caution in any technical parts of the bike course.

I guess the bike leg will be slower than i hoped for but i can make it up in the run. Since most of the course is hilly with turns... i will have to be extra careful, but then again... so will all the other riders :-)

Yeah the key is there are other races to do. Just use this one as a learning experience more then anything. If you place cool if not you have something to blame it on :)

It's only a sprint...relax and be careful...uptight riders make big crashes.. Rain and poor visibility could cancel the swim and I've often seen sprints become Du's, so be ready.

Good advice in this thread. Remember this isn't the Olympic Trials and just use common sense based on the conditions. Be cautious of other nervous riders. Dial it down a notch or two and finish unscraped and uninjured.

Thanks for the advice! Who knows... the weather man could be wrong and the rain could stay away... they have been wrong before!! :-)

I assume you're talking about Eagle Creek? I'll be there as well. If the road is wet just be sure to slow way down on the sharp turns and stay off the paint!! Be sure to watch for race "rookies" too. I'm using tomorrow for a warm-up for Muncie next month. I've spent to much time training to get injured in a sprint race so if the weather is bad I'll
work on my transition times and not worry much about the rest. Good Luck.

I wish. In my experience, RD's seem to err on the side of caution and cancel legs (or entire races) under fairly mild rainy conditions.

Two examples - in May of '06 a local sprint was turned into just a 5K because of thunderstorms. At least we got to race still, but what frustrated me was that the rain stopped at about the time the gun went off and the roads were all but dry by the time I finished. We could have easily had a duathlon still - the clouds were rapidly dispersing and the sun was coming out.

Another recent example is at CapTex, (a regional Oly) where they cancelled the entire race because of a constant drizzle - there was no lightning, no wind - only wetness. Cancelling the swim and bike would have been understandable, but I still don't understand why they didn't at least let us run.

Anyway, my point is - I'd be more worried about them cancelling the race than I would be about having problems racing in the rain.

Yep, that is what I am talking about. I was wanting to do the one in Muncie next month but that is the same day as the RAIN ride and i am doing that.

Good Luck to you too!!

Do you think they would maybe postpone it until Sunday? If it was too bad to race at all?

Maybe - the CapTex RD considered it, but decided against it. Good luck.

Let's see, I raced in a HIM two years ago when a hurricane was close....then at the FL 70.3 this year there were smoke advisories (as in, don't go outside unless you have to)...and last year the Gasparilla half-mary went on even though there were storms and rain at the start. What I'm saying is be ready to race. You of course can choose to not go...I personally wouldn't risk it in a stormy sprint because you can catch another sprint anytime for the next few months and 'cause I'm an iron-whimp

I will definitely go to the race. If i have to go slower on the bike then I will do that. And... i always felt like i was running faster when i played soccer in the rain ... maybe i will get a PR in my 3 mile run!!

64 degrees and 40% chance of rain at start time. I can't wait!!! Hopefully the lightning will stay away. I'd rather race in the rain than not at all.

You should come race in the Pacific Northwest. I have raced in the worst conditions here and never had it canceled. I did a course in the Columbia Gorge with winds gusting to 40 mph (I *averaged* 12 mph on the bike!!!) and the waves on the swim were unreal, and it was 100+ degrees F. It was like a blowdryer. And a couple of years ago did a HIM in 41 degrees and pelting rain and windstorm. My last race a month ago, I never felt my feet the entire run course, they never thawed out from the ice cold rain. I think race directors here are anything but cautious. Then again, if they cancelled every tri it rained on here, no one would ever be able to put on races.

And I agree with the advice to the OP in this thread: take it easy, live to race another day. I have seen some hellatious crashes in rainy races. It's better to be a minute or two slower than covered in road rash or worse.
