I've never used them. However, I know some of the manufacturers (Rocky Mounts is one that I've seen) won't garuantee their rack if you use them. They create siginificantly more drag when driving (more force on the rack and crappier gas mileage). Just wipe down your bike after travel.

I've been reading quite a bit about these products. It seems my best bet is to use some saran wrap, foam pipe insulation and tie wraps.
It will take awhile to get it just right but I'm guessing it will do the trick.
I've got a fork mount roof rack on my car. I'm searching for one of those bike protectors to keep the bugs from plastering my bike on some of my longer trips.
I'd appreciate some feedback as to which people have thought worked well or which I should avoid.
