Hey everyone,

So I'm doing my first tri in july and I'm having trouble deciding what I should wear. I did a search and noticed that people are really suggesting tri shorts. I have bike shorts and I really dont have the funds to get the tri ones (I recently just bought new bike shorts...) soooo how much will this mess up my race? Im going to try to soak my bike shorts and do a brick bike/run in them but is there anyone out there who did a tri in their bike shorts and survived?

Also, if I swim in the bike shorts and a sports bra can I stay in that for the rest of the race? (I read in some threads that usat requires tops now...not sure if thats true or not...)

thanks for your help!!!

I can't see why not. My trisuit is exactly like cycling shorts on the bottom and I wear it under my wetsuit and it gets soaked but, I never notice. I can't answer part II I'm afraid... :)

What distance race? If its a sprint, you can prolly get by with just a bathing suit.

Problem with bike shorts is a water logged pad. It can cause big chafing.

Life is short. Play hard and get dirty doing it.

it's going to be a sprint race...won't the bike be uncomfortable with just a bathing suit??

thats why you haul @ss on the bike derrrrrr lol j/k na its not too bad having done one in just a speedo (don't ask, lost a bet) you might be a bit uncomfy but nothing that isn't easily tolerable.

Its not bad at all to do tri's in just a swim suit. I regularly do sprints, particularly non-wetsuit ones in my swimsuit. I've even done olys in my swim suit with no problems. You really do not even notice.

I don't think that I would want to bike/run in wet bike shorts, but I've done races in tri-shorts and a sports bra... You don't have to wear a full top - just something - a sports bra is fine.

Running and biking in wet bike shorts is not very comfortable because the pad in bike shorts is thicker than the pad in tri shorts. If you decide to go with the swim suit you can try a neoprene seat cover for your saddle (they are about $15). It will give you a little extra cushion on the bike.

I have seen people with bike shorts in tri´s with no problems. My advice would be you go out there and try on a training day. Remember: Nothing new on race day!
