Sprint Tri & Half Marathon Training

I survived my first sprint tri last week and I'm signed up for a few more over the summer with the last one being in August. I'm considering attempting my first half marathon in October. I'm fairly certain that I'll continue doing sprint tris next year. If my swim confidence improves significantly, I might try a HIM next year.

My training since April has been 2-3 hrs swimming, 2-3 riding, 1-1.5 hrs of running per week plus weights and yoga. How should I go about training for the half marathon? Should I switch to a HIM type of program? Just add more running miles to my current program? Should I switch to a half marathon plan and add in a bit of swimming and riding? Uggh so many options. Please help-

Thanks,
Mark

Part of it will be what works for your body, and what keeps you motivated. And keep in mind that tris tend to be my focus now, and any running races I do would be in a mix of tris. But I'd say try incorporating a half marathon plan into your current program. I find that swimming and biking helps me get a bit of extra fitness, not get bored, and prevent some injuries :)

I've dealt with a similar scenario recently (training for Oly's and a marathon).

It's not an ideal way to train for either, but I would suggest following a half marathon plan, except substitute one or two runs per week with a bike ride. Push the intensity of the bike rides though, since a "recovery" ride won't prepare your legs very well for the abuse of a half mary.

I faced the same problem at the beginning of the year. I was training for for a mini marathon and also trying to try to train for my first tri. Since my main focus at that time was beating my half marathon time... i focused on my run plan. On my Cross Training days i would throw in swimming or biking. I was confident that i could get through the bike with no problem but i didn't know how to swim so i tried to get more time in the pool if i had to choose. I say just stick with a running plan and on cross training days thrown in a bike or swim! Good Luck!
