Endurance levels?

How are the endurance levels that are displayed in profiles supposed to be calculated? Are they a metric based on relative placement in a given race? e.g. if I were to place in the top 20th percent in the swim then would I describe my swimming endurance as an '8'? Is it relative to your age group or the entire field? Scientific minds want to know.

Aw..I wouldn't get to focused on that..we had a thread on this last year sometime...It's not scientific, it's personal opinion.
Tribro thought about doing away with it but decided against it.
If you can spank a sprint race and grab an AG but couldn't do an HIM...do you put down high numbers? You can go all day,but not very fast...do you put down high numbers? If anyone else looks at your numbers and judges you on them...well, that's sad.
I can run all day, literally and bike too...but speed? I'm only capable of winning the womens 60-64 AG.
I Like your "1"s. I'm 7,8,9 because those numbers are next to each other on the key board.

That's how I do it... I take a good or peak race in my target distance and go from there based on my overall placement in each event. I do it relative to overall - f20-24 is always too small and sometimes just women is usually too small as well. Overall is more consistent across races.
I need to update mine - my biking ability seems to have taken a plummet and my running has improved...

I do it just based on how long I can go on in each sport...

Yeah Dan, like you said - I view them as rounded "deciles" (in AG).

Ya. I think you've got the intended use. Not scientific at all ;) Was just an idea to help people get a better idea of one others experience and connect with those doing similar races and having similar fitness.

I've just used the percentiles that come up in my race results over and over at every distance. I'm in the top 1% of swimmers, usually the top 10- 20% of cyclists and the bottom half of runners.

Interesting. I also use whatever race I've recently done and figure the AG percentages. I'm about a middle of the pack swimmer, better cyclist, and best on the run.
