First Event
Way to go! It sounds like you learned quite a few things that will help you next month. Good luck!
Congrats! That is a great run, and the swim just takes time. You and the coach will get there :)
1 mile swim and 5k run? That's the most unbalanced event I've seen. A good swimmer could walk the 5K and still beat a runner that's not a strong swimmer. A swimmer's dream, I suppose.
Good job getting through the swim with a good run. You'll get better with more open water swims.
Tinted goggles? I've two pair at home, ones with a blue tint and ones that are clear, I've not seen any noticeable difference between the two. OWS has a different glare than pool swimming I suppose.

First of all congratulations. It´s a great feel of accomplishment when one finishes his first event.
I have to agree that the event looks unbalanced but in the end it´s all about the fun of doing it.
A run-swim-run event is called an Aquathlon. Duathlons are run-bike-run. So it looks like it was more of a Aquathlon kind of event.
If you are planning participating in a Tri soon, maybe you would be better off with a Tri suit. Most races and regulations prohibit you from racing without a shirt of some kind (I guess it would cause too many accidents to have the females biking around topless ;) )
Hyperactive Trifueler!!!! (I refuse to let the status go :p)
There was a 2mi swim/5k race also. I'm glad I didn't enter that one!
Thanks for your encouragement, I can't wait to hit the pool tonight.

If I ever took a race director slot I am 100% willing to take that chance that some may crash because the ends justify the means :)
Dude 2 mi swim and a 5k... Were there anything BUT swimmers in that event. I mean come on now why would you even have a run :) Seriously though congrats on your finish.

I ran my first multisport event this morning! It was billed as a duathlon, but was more just a 1 mile swim followed by a 5k run. I'm running my first tri in a month in the same lake, thats why I chose to do it.
My biggest problem is the swim totally took me out of contention. It took over 50 minutes to swim the mile. I even got destroyed by the people swiming 2 miles. The run was great, I finished it in 22 minutes on an extremely hilly course. I've run it before in 20 minutes on fresh legs so I was very pleased with that part.
The biggest problems were:
1. Goggles! It was my fault I only brought clear ones and not tinted. The glare was very bad. They also got foggy very quickly and when I tried to wipe them off they filled with water. I just went without them most of the race.
2. I got a cramp in my foot that slowed my start, but it worked itself out pretty quickly.
3. I got a stitch in my side. Is that even possible in swimming? Since swimming keeps my arms over my head a lot it wasn't as bad as it could have been, but the sensation surprised me. I haven't had one while running in years.
4. My transition was kind of shaky mostly because I had a hard time getting on my top. Next time I'm just going to go shirtless.
Once I got on the road I felt extreamly good. I could have easily done a 10k.
Anyway I had a great time and I'm calling it a success. Next month it's only a .5 mile swim and I'm going to step up the open water swimming workouts. I've been working with a swim coach for a few weeks so by them I think I'll be better prepared!.
