alright this is my second attempt at this post so it will be a little shorter this time round.

I have decided to try one of the corporate IM events in 2008. IMWI is by far the closest to me since I live in IA. From talking to people on here and some of my friends I have heard some scary things about registering. I have heard all sorts of rumors from you have to be there at the 2007 race just to register for 2008. I have also heard that you can register online but it has to be done the same day as the 2007 race and even then there is no guarantee you will get a spot.
I am very interested to learn the truth about registering for one of these events. I really don't feel like driving to madison just to register, if I need to be up early the morning of the 2007 race then I would like to know.

I know there are plenty of people on here that the corporate IM events and just want to get the rumors separated from the reality of registering. guess the post wasn't that short after all =)

from what i've heard, being there is a way of guaranteeing you'll get in, whereas sitting at home on the internet is somewhat of a shot in the dark...
volunteer at the event and give yourself a reason to go see it in person before signing up the next morning.

It sold out in 45 minutes online this year. Just be awake and on the site at the opening bell and you'll get a slot.

Being there, if possible, would take the anxiety out of registering online. IMWI sold out same day last year, I think I heard 40 minutes after opening online.

Online registration is 10 a.m. local WI time the morning after the race on active.com. The sight gets hammered and it is sooo slow. I had 2 screens going and was still freaking out, it took 20+ nerve wracking minutes to process the information.

Are you feelin' lucky....

I have signed up to volunteer so I will be able to get a spot. What is the protocol for signing up? Will I need to bring the roughly $500 with me? Also is it common for volunteers to sign up or is there a chance I could miss out by not being an athlete this year?

last question. I promise - what kind of swag do they give at these events? I mean $475 for one race? I know its an IM but that is steep. I almost expect the finishers medal to be made out of gold.

When you sign up the morning after the race - you will receive a voucher - you will then complete registration on-line two weeks later using the voucher number you received. You pay when you complete registration on-line not the day you get the voucher.
Pretty much whoever is in-line gets in - athlete, volunteer whatever.
Pretty much a finishers shirt, medal, bumper sticker is it. You pay extra for the pasta dinner. Once you arrive there for the actual race they walk you through the whole process from registering, to practice swims etc. Not much swag but a well run event. The day after the race they will have finisher bike shirts etc, so have some $ set aside for that if you want that or other finisher merchandise - they ran out last year very quickly. And more $ for pictures of course.

do I understand you right when you say I need to be there the morning after the race to register? Does that mean I have to stay the night and be there on Monday?

Yep. Registration will be on Monday morning. If I remember correctly, registration onsite started at 9:00 am, which is an hour before the online registration opened.

Also, I would scope out the hotels in the area while you are there and then make a hotel reservation immediately after you register. All of the close hotels fill very fast.

As for staying Monday, you might want to do that anyway, since there is a thank you meeting for all of the volunteers Monday morning.
