You choose which Trek
I would buy the 5000. from my experiences there is nothing like a full carbon frame. Also remember that components can always be changed, but a trek 2200 with full dura ace or record is still an aluminum frame. Personally I would buy the 5000 and quickly change the front derailer and crank to a double. If you are a newer rider than a triple may be something you are interested in. I personally dislike triple's.
It really all comes down to what you want. They are both going to be good bikes, but having originally rode an aluminum road bike and now I'm on a full carbon and the difference is unbelievable. Go for the 5000 and start saving to upgrade the components. Not that 105 is bad, you just asked what we would do =)
"If your not going to win, make the fellow in front of you break a record."
I'd take the 2200. I am a fan of bang for buck. The carbon frame of the 5000 is NOT Trek's famous OCLV or made in America, but rather some generic carbon and made in Taiwan. If I am buying a Trek, I want the OCLV. Also the parts spec on the 2200 is purdy darn good- needs no swapping or exchanging. Buy, ride, and race.
The geometry is the same for both bikes, and I am willing to bet the weight is close as well. I dont get the big huge fuss over carbon. It rides ok. Ti is better. Alum with carbon fork, seastays, and seatpost is pretty dang close- but at a fraction of the cost.
Life is short. Play hard and get dirty doing it.
I found a '06 2200 with a double crank in my size. Had to travel a couple hours to get it. The front derailleur is a 105 for some reason, didn't consider it worth fighting over. I had them put my pedals on and they kept the Shimano 505's that were on it. (I didn't notice until I got home, thought they were in the bag with the rest of the stuff).
Not a huge loss, from what I've read they aren't very good.
I don't think I'm going to be disappointed with my choice.
Thanks for the feedback everyone.
