.5mi swim/ 15mi bike / 3.4mi run - June 3rd.

Over all, not so bad for the first tri I've ever completed. I didnt complete my first attempt at a tri (two years ago), so finishing this one was a huge step for me.

I finished in 1:45:57. The swim went surprisingly well, I finished in 17:53 which is about 10 minutes faster than I thought I would do. The bike was dreadful. I finished it in 49:24. I just couldnt get comfortable and my pedal stroke felt very weak. The run was mediocre at most, finished in 33:13 which is not very fast for me at all. The course was very hilly which might be distorting my impression of how I performed, so I'm trying to stay positive and optimistic for my next race (July 22nd in Kingston, NY).

Problems I experienced during the race:
During the first transition I actually felt very dizzy, disoriented and blacked out a bit. As weird as it may sound, I felt fine after I sat for a while and got my bike shoes on. I did eat that morning around 6:30am, the race was at 9am. Any thoughts?

On the bike, after 10mi or so, my upper back really started to hurt, on the left side only. I couldnt stay in the aero for longer than 30-60s intervals without having to change positions. Anyone?

Thanks everyone, in advance, for any feedback.

Regards,
Curtis

it's common to be a little dizzy after swimming...the blood is just resettling around your body again after being horizontal for 17 minutes. the solution experienced folks tell me is to kick a bunch before coming out of the water so that more blood flows to the legs before you try to stand up

and congrats on your first completed tri!

Believe it or not....... no matter how step a hill in any race I do.... my highest HR during any race is always in T1. Funny isn´t it??

It´s normal I think to feel a bit dizzy after the swim.

As for the aereo bars...... you´ll have to practice more. And maybe check out the way you are using them. After a while I learned I wasn´t positioning my arms correctly or at least not correctly for my own comfort.

Every tri you do is a chance to learn something new....and a chance to mess up in something else. You´ll see.

The important thing is: now you are officially a Triathlete. Congratulations.

Thanks a lot for the feed back everyone.

Baja- I know that was a hilly course but it shouldnt take me longer than 30 min to run 3.3, even if I'm exhausted. I'm not beating myself up, I just know what I can do. Thanks for the encouragement though! If you finished before me, you might have noticed me finish, I got into a sprint down the hill with one guy....it was hysterical.

AC and Tikal- Thanks for the advice, I will work on those tips while training for my next event.

Regards,
Curtis

Congrats on the race!
Ya, increasing your kick at the finish does get the blood flowing and will help. As for the areo bars - have you been using them for training? A bike fit will help get you more comfortable on the bike as well as working on your core and flexibility.
