Hey yall, I'm in my second season of triathlons and one thing I struggle with is my pre-race routine, especially the morning of the race. Im not a morning person at all so getting up for a 7:30 start is a struggle. For every race, I feel like I havnt eaten right and I am still half asleep going into the water.

Here is my routine: wake up and eat a granola bar and banana, drink a gatorade, and get a shower (to help wake me up). Then I arrive and get checked in. Thats pretty much it.

So do any of yall have any tips that might help my (and I assume others) situation?

I've tried going to bed earlier too, I toss and turn for a couple hours, so that doesnt help.

Thanks

Your routine looks just about exactly like mine but I guess I am just a morning person. You know most coaches would agree a little coffee in the morning isn't gonna hurt you. That might help some...

I don't sleep worth a darn the night before, but it's quality sleep two nights and the week before that matter. A restless night before a race is common and won't affect your performance.

I never have trouble getting up due to usual race day nerves, but Jstyle has a good point about a cup of coffee. The shower helps.

Sleep? The night before a big race...or a small one for that matter?
Never good. But that's me.
I'm up early, usually about 4...to start the toilet train rolling...I go alot before a race...
Bagel with PB and J...oatmeal too for IM's and a smug mug of hot black tea with sugar.
I always try to get to the venue early...why leav eyourself open to the stress of rushing around by getting there late?
Get set up...walk the Transition area...pump up the i tunes and wait for the madness to begin!

I must be the minority with being able to sleep no problem before a race. I might have been a tad restless before IMAZ but not that bad.

I am a strong advocate of a cup of coffee in the morning. Go for a 20 min run to wake up the muscles. Then, like Anton, eat food, toilet train, crank the ipod, get ready for battle.

Ouch, My everything!

be up early so that you can get food settled and wakefulness established before racing

it's like warming up for your day

I know that My best workouts come after I have been up for awhile...so it follows, for me, that being up really early helps me feel more ...together(?) when race time comes around.
In climbing we called it an "Alpine start." Out and up and off the peaks before afternoon storms rolled in...By race time ,usually,I've already been up for 3 or 4 hours...

You can also start to alter your sleep pattern the week before the race by going to bed earlier and earlier and getting up earlier and earlier. Then it's not so bad come race day.

Now, I just need to make sure to do that for myself. I work the night shift and that kind a throws a hammer into the mix. But for you normal people out there, that would work. :)

I would be hesitant to call just about any one here "normal" :)
