First i have a knee problem. On a recent MRI it showed about a golf ball sized sist on the lower outside of my right knee. It knocks everything out of alignment and causes me some bearable pain. I need to have surgery but im gonna wait til after the season is over in october. My shin is also hurting a lot on the inside and i took some time off and it wasnt hurting when i walked but when i run it hurts again. At this point i feel i need to meet my goals of com pleting my first sprint tri and completing an olympic distance by the end of the summer. I can do the run and bike but my swimming is horrendous :(
I had a stress fracture last yr and i figure ill have another one this yr. And with my knee already messed up shoud i just push my body til it breaks or lay off and be unsatisfied?

One of the most important things I see in being a triathlete is listening to your body. Sure, you could push really hard, finish one tri, but then be done for good. And that (to me) just isn't worth it. Tri isn't about a certain race for me -- it's about a lifestyle.

Why do you expect a stress fracture?

I'd say if your swimming is rough anyways, and there is leg pain, get in the pool a bunch. If the kicking bugs your leg, use a pull buoy. Get used to the feeling of the water, and breathing patterns. You'll also be staying in shape while letting your legs and such recover.

I wouldn't say pushing to breaking and stopping are your only choices. I'd vote for "proceed with caution". Do the things that hurt your leg less. See how it goes. Maybe even start the tri knowing that you'll need to walk the whole run, and walk it. Be ok with the limits of your body on a given day, and work with them, letting yourself get stronger since you won't have to stop completely for injury.

Maybe you'll have to scale back your goals, and go just for the sprint this year. But only time will tell.

Best of luck! :)

I would lay off for a little bit and get fixed up. I made the mistake in high school of not getting my wrist checked when I couldn't lift a basketball with it. It later turned out to be broken. This caused me an extra couple weeks in a cast and a longer and harder therapy.

Personally, I don't see the point in extending an injury because your workouts are not going to be as efficient and as enjoyable. Also, looking at it from a longterm perspective, you are going to need to get it fixed, getting it done now will help you train better later on. It's frustrating to hold back from an injury, but you will probably will be better off later on. Good luck this summer, hope you meet your goals.

yea i had pain in my foot last yr and i didnt stop i just kept running on it and it was a stress fracture. i almost feel if i keep running a lot i will get one in my shin. i missed the nyc marathon the past 2 years because of fractures. i dont wanna miss it this yr so i guess i will lay off it a bit. grrr i hate small nagging injuries
