All the questions you wanted to ask but were afraid
For Poo I cut fiber out the 2-3 days before a race so I don't have to go while I'm racing.
I pee'd myself 5 times on the bike in my last half. I would crest a hill, stand up and open up. It took me a little while to get it going. I carried more water than I planned on and thoroughly cleaned myself after each visit. I couldn't do it if I was pedaling, and that was pretty annoying, and I think thats why I went so much. Make sure you have ventillation in your shoes because they will fill up. And man, they smell bad afterwards.
Poo:Dude no fiber....at least for 2 or 3 days bro....fiber will make you poo more eficiently and often.
Pee:If you have to let it go on the bike or run....just do...I have done a few times...even running
Diarrea: Some reason to get diarrea
1.Too many gels can upset your stomach, some times even too concentrated sport drink mixes can cause diarrea and stomach cramps.
2.You try something new on race day
3.Irritable Bowel Syndrome; meaning that your colon goes nuts because you are going nuts because of race anxiety.
4.You drink or drank non processed water.
Rule of thumb:What ever happens, what ever reason, do not go to the mighty Imodium. Diarrea no matter the reason, is a way to eliminate or try to restore balance in our guts. You plugged it with Imodium and you rise the risk of getting cramps. If you have explosive impending diarrea...let it go....
Viagra: Dude where in the world you heard anything about viagra and Tris....it is a vessel dilator...so...I can´t see a reasonable reason....unless you might want to race with a hell of a headache, or with the unconfortable situation of running with a stiffy....

You can avoid the poo thing, or at least lessen the liklihood by avoiding any trips to mexico in the week before...
I have a crazy colon...race morning I'm up extra early, like 4, and usually have 4 or 5 bowel movements before race time...I can't remember the last time I had to go during a race.
Diarrhea during a race was described to me by my doc (also a tri-head) as being the result of dehydration. Body needs water to process food in the gut. No water available. Gut says: "everybody out,we can process you." You're looking for a place to go.
I pee on the bike...a'la bhanrah, on hills. Peeing while running (also called "trail wagging") is crazy...stuff goes everywhere....just stop and pee.
Viagra works for it's intended purpose. (Give me a break guys...I'm 53) I heard the same rumor and tried it at an ultra...it doesn't help in races.

Diarrhea - How to avoid? What causes it to happen during or after a race? Fortunately it has never happened to me during--but after long races my stomach usually percolates uncomfortably. I've thought of stuffing an immodium pilll in my bento box just in case, but am afraid of the consequences of that, too.
I've tried Imodium and it doesn't seem to make any difference. Low fiber works pretty well though, as others have said.
Poo - Any tips on making sure you don't have one on deck 5 min. after you put your wetsuit on? Lots of fiber the day before? No eating past 6pm the night before? Enema (bleh). Wake up at 5am and do jumping jacks?
I always have to go right before a race, no matter what. I just plan for it, and have never had to go during a race.
Pee - Everyone does it in the suit, but who does it on the bike? On the run? I'm unsure if I'd even be able to let loose while running even if I wanted to....but if I did--how to avoid getting it in your shoe? Any tricks to peeing on the bike?
In my only HIM I went twice on the bike and thrice on the run, without ever stopping - and I had to go A LOT after the race...guess I drank enough :)
I didn't care what it got on or where it went. The shoes and shorts were fine - I had more important things to worry about. Besides, volunteers were spraying us down during the run - so with all my sweat plus the water from the hoses, plus the water from the sponges, the pee concentration in my shorts/shoes was pretty low.

Race day is a sure cure for any constipation I might have. I'm completely cleared out by race time. As was mentioned skip the big salad the day or two before. I will have some veggies but limited compared to normal.
I can't pee while cycling or running, so I have to stop and find a tree or something.
I'm w Anton. Get up early nd eat, let settle and coffee. Go off coffee for a while before a race, then on the day have it for breakie early and it will make you vacate :D

Dr. Rios - when people are stressed out, it affects the GI system right? Hence, diarrhea, nausea, heartburn, early evacuation...
I heard this somewhere recently.

Yes Toni, stress, anxiety, can cause GI upset, from top to bottom, can cause cramps, nausea, bloating, diarrea, and/or constipation. A lot of stress chemical mediators are realeased, and that changes the GI enviroment and balance.
Acid production get higher, colonic motility gets crazy, absortions gets impaired, sphincter tone changes.

Thanks for confirming what I'd heard.
Stress is the reason for everyone's constant or occassional "evacuations" when getting ready for your race. Just make sure you hydrate!

if you have lots of diarhea take some pepto bismo, whenever i get sick and have tons of diahrea and it starts to hurt wiping because i have wiped too much i go for the pepto. stops the diahrea and turns your poo black.

black poo is a VERY bad sign. it typically means you're bleeding in your colon and the blood has been processed and turns black. I'm not saying pepto would do that, but that's what we look for in the medical field for GI bleeds. food for thought.
and like Dr. Rios said, if your body is flushing poo out, it's in order to get rid of something bad or balance out your electrolytes. so immodium or pepto is not a great thing. painful wiping sucks, but balance is better. :)

The key for good managing of a case of diarrea is to keep the patient and/or athlete well hydrated at all times...
If you are having liquid evacuations, but if you are not vomiting, that means that whatever volumen of fluid lost can be replaced, may be water, gatorade or any fluid replacement.
Imodium, Pepto....I would be careful of those

My secret to not having to take a crap (might not be good advice) but I make sure I don't go the day before. That way all of it is saved up for the morning when I first wake up. It hasn't failed me yet :)

Mmmmm food for thought and bleeding from your colon in the same paragraph. I'm going to go puke now
Good info...I raced the clearlake One O One yesterday and fortunately all my pre race bodily activities went as planned....it was the longest race I've ever done and though the bike course was awesome and fast, the run course was hell. My biggest issue was nausea. On the bike I just had a lot of gas. But on the run I just wanted to puke. I took a tums, but that did not help at all....only thing that would make the nausea go away was to stop eating and drinking, which I did--and bonk'd hard and ended up being carried from the finish line to the medical tent. I lost an estimated 11 lbs (.07% bodyweight).
I'm doing a full IM in Aug. and now I have to figure out how to increase my ability to process liquids/food/gels during the race. No way I'll be able to finish if I have a repeat of yesterday. Aside from taking bong hits on the bike, any ideas on how to increase my appetite/hold food down?

Nobody:Again can be anxiety the reason why you could not hold anything down.
Also, sometimes, for som athletes, gels are too concentrated (too sweet) so make them vomit.
Try to dilute your fluids and gels....chase them with water for example.
There is another trick that works. If you put an ice piece in your mouth until it melts, and probably you get what is call "brain freeze" it also inhibits the nause center in your brain, helping to hold down things in your stomach.
Pediatricians tell this to moms when they are doing discharge teaching of a kid that has vomiting and diarrea.
So, having a really icy cold drink of Gatorade for example, will inhibit your vomit trigger in your brain.
I have tried...clinicacally with patients...and with myself trainning...it really works.

LOL! I have actually had this done to me, when I was on a mock deployment they were testing some new liquid fuel garbage, stuff tasted probably worse then the latrine water and I was having trouble keep it down. So they got it just shy of freezing told me to slam it back, had a killer ice cream headache but kept the "food" down so it worked.

Awesome. I'll try the ice. Anxiousness/nervousness is never a problem. Definitely was low on H20, but I think that's cause I was trying to cram in too many calories.

Consider when you are training you need to train yourself on nutrition so you need to know what affects you during a race situation. You will eventually know what to do for you by race day and how to work around it.
If you train well you will have less race day stress in general than if you are not so prepared. Once you have a few races under your belt you will have less stress too.
VIAGRA? Maybe save that for after the race to celebrate?
I might race better if somebody else was taking Viagra.
I would be running away from the guy in spandex, sporting wood, chasing me. :D
Any suggestions for poo-proofing after a sea-swim? I've only done one aquathon, and it was in the sea. I swallowed so much saltwater that I pooped a bit during the run. My theory: the salt drew in so much water into my stomach/bowel that poop had to come out...any suggestions how to avoid??
Don't drink 'til after the swim? ;)
Seriously, I'm not sure... I've never done a salt water tri!

Gee I've enjoyed this thread - who'd have thought...
I played soccer for over 20 years and without fail I'd have to have 2 or 3, um, clearouts, before a game (we used to call them 'nervies'). Didn't matter how experienced I was, how unimportant the game, it just happened - I'm just the 'nervous before an event' type.
I just signed up for my first tri, six weeks away - and the nerves have started already. Couldn't sleep last night and I'm looking forward to plenty of nervies and days of painful wipes before the event - I can't wait:)

for those of you that pee on the bike, do you hold your bottles? [assuming your bottle cages are in the traditional spots]
No I just pretend it doesn't hit ;)
Honestly, I think of it each time, but during an IM or half this year (my first year peeing on the bike) I was pushing to my limit and I just didn't want another thing to deal with.

Honest, huh?
I'm just not super bothered by my own bodily functions anymore... I think adventure racing is to be blamed for that one.

I just recently acquired this 'skill' for the bike. The first time was tough, but after that became pretty easy. For the IM I will only have my areo bottle and one on the down tube. So none on the seat tube. So not really any issue, but when racing don't really think about it anyway. I do notice that I am even more thorough now when cleaning the bike afterwards!

not what i was expecting to hear...but then again, not that surprised either (triathletes are fairly durable people!)
i had been hoping there was some special technique to save the bottles from drippage...
btw, i second the "ewww!"
Well urine is sterile after all. I pee'd for the first time during a race a couple weeks back, making me a real triathlete. ;) But since I'm a guy I can choose one of four directions...two of which avoid any water bottles bolted to the bike.

I swallowed a ton of saltwater at IMFL last year (my first saltwater swim in a tri) and didn't have that problem. But I did have to stop and pee six or seven times on the bike course alone, which was way more than I ever had to in training. I hadn't bothered to figure out peeing on the bike because it was never an issue, but I'll know better next time and won't bother with the porta-potties and avoid the 12 extra minutes on my watch that weren't on my bike computer: ugh!

if you're referring to the ability to aim...you're riding one-handed or no hands at this point? ...sounds challenging
or are you just leaning waay out?
i figured "peeing on the bike" pretty much meant peeing ON the bike ;)

Here's a few of my questions that I've never seen covered for obvious reasons:

Viagra--what's the story with Viagra and long distances? When I first heard of it I thought that's the absolute last thing I'd take before putting on a speedo and running around in front of a crowd. But I am curious about it as an injury prevention substance (poor circulation to my back, cramps, etc.). Does it work? Anyone have any "friends" who've tried it? Illegal for races?
Pee - Everyone does it in the suit, but who does it on the bike? On the run? I'm unsure if I'd even be able to let loose while running even if I wanted to....but if I did--how to avoid getting it in your shoe? Any tricks to peeing on the bike?
Any other taboo or embarassing questions I missed?
