I’m heading out with a couple guys early tomorrow from Manhattan (taking the PATH train to Jersey City) to the Jersey Shore for the weekend. My furthest rides have been 30-40 so I’m looking forward to what is probably a relatively flat 80 mile ride (especially the ride along the water). My only questions are does anyone travel in this area and know how crowded the roads are on this route? It will be 6-7am while we are in the congested part, but I’m afraid it still might not be the safest route. I ride in Manhattan all the time, so a little heavy traffic doesn't phase me, but heavy 50+ mph traffic probably would. Below is the map of the route, any suggestions?

I know that the roads at the end of your route, from Manasquan South (I used to live in Point Pleasant) are going to be very busy. Cyclists are pretty common on most of those roads, but I'd be careful out there.

thanks for the heads up. Unfortunately the least experienced guy out of the three off us only made it about 6 blocks in Manhattan before running a red light and getting hit by a car (he's fine, just a ruined bike and a slightly injured thumb). So maybe it was a sign that it wasn't meant to be...not to mention a wasted weekend in terms of training, but the beach sure was nice after the bus ride down there :)

Glad he is okay.
That is one way to get some beach time instead of training.

Wait...folks are saying "aw...too bad your training got screwed up"
He ran a red light (never safe) and was lucky to survive! Sounds like a Karma crisis to me! I'm glad he's ok...but lets be careful out there!

yup, it was completely his fault...and then on top of it after he got hit and just had some pain in his thumb/wrist, he told us he didn't want us to finish/start the ride....and since i didn't want him to come in the first place because of his inexperience (i don't think he realized how hard an 80 mile ride would be, especially trying to keep up with us), i was kind of angry. although i was glad he was ok
