I'm competing in my first ever triathlon this summer, but I am unsure if my bike will be good enough for racing. I am loathed to buy a new bike, as the one I have is a pretty high spec, light hybrid bike - Spcialized Sirrus Elite (http://www.specialized.com/bc/SBCBkModel.jsp?spid=21802).

I was wondering if I could improve it's performance by changing the handlebars or adding bar ends (http://www.evanscycles.com/product.jsp?style=10367) or would this be a waste of time?

Since it's your first tri, I'd go with what you have. The Specialized is a nice bike and hybrids and mountain bikes are not uncommon sites at most tris.

And I don't think the bar ends would provide a real performance advantage. Though they can make you more comfortable by giving you another hand position.

Good luck!

Go with what you have got.
If you really like it then consider getting a road bike.:D
