Car Knocks Me Out For The Season

Poor me! I was grabbing a quick bike workout yesterday before work, 10 days before my first race of the season. A car passed me going in the same direction in a 55 mph zone. She then quickly turned right, into a drive way. I hit her doing about 30 mph. I shattered my collar bone and then creased my helmet on her roof. As I was slidding down her windshield, she looked me in the eye and yelled "I had my blinker on, Didn't you see my blinker". After I landed on the ground and rolled up into a ball she got out and continued to tell me how it was my fault. I have to see a surgeon tomorrow to see if they need to operate on the jigsaw puzzle that was my collar bone. At least the Police new that it was failure to yield on her fault and said the police report will say as much. My point is, I dont know what I could have done to be safer...So just be careful out their trifuel friends.

There's no measure of safety to be taken for stupid drivers, after the fact there are lawyers to make sure that those drivers learn a measurable lesson in sharing the road.

Hope you're able to heal quickly.

Good luck.

Sorry about the accident. We all are at risk every time we hit the roads. I hope you get well soon.

I got hit at 80km/hr at a stand still by a car; over the hood and winshield. On my second life now actually. I know what it is like and share your feelings right now. Life sucks sometimes. Day in day I out I commute with fear of being hit by idiots like that. Been in your situation a few times. Best thing is to just try and anticipate the drivers and watch the way they move after they pass you. I know, hard....sometimes they are just a$$holes. Some of them do not care for us. Most are just oblivious of what is around them day to day. I see it EVERY day. As bikers we need to anticipate things, but sometimes even this is not enough. You did the best you could. Get well soon. All the best for a speedy one and that she gets what she should. Karma!

I've been lucky, i've had almost the same thing happen to me several times, but ive narrowly avoided it. one time by hitting a parked car to avoid someone pulling in front of me. You really can't do anything to avoid an accident like that. Get better soon.

I had the same thing happen to me with a car turning directly in my path - luckily I ended up with only a few bruises and a cracked helmet.
So sorry to hear that you were injured. Hope you are on the mend quickly. Best of luck in your recovery.

So sorry to hear that! I can't believe she had the gall to stand there and chew you out as you're curled into a ball and whincing from pain. Glad you got the police involved.

Heal quickly and do everything your doctor tells you to do in order to make sure you heal properly. Don't rush your recovery. Physical therapy afterwards!

Good luck!

Sorry to hear that! I was hit by a car in January, luck though, as I only suffered some road rash and bent aero bars.

I agree with BBB. Something I picked up while learning to ride motorcycles and use all the time biking is you have to act as if everyone is going to hit you, turn at random times, or pull out of the driveway. I NEVER assume that someone sees me. The unforunate reality is that this sport is a dangerous one - we need to take every effort to ride in low traffic areas and ride defensively when we get around cars....Ride safe friends!

Really sorry to hear that. This is the sad part about biking, our security depends so much on other people not being stupid!
Hope you get a quick recovery!

Sorry to hear about your accident. I have had to bail-out a few times for the exact same thing. The last time the lady realized her mistake and decided to stop half way through the turn instead of continuing on…nowhere for me to go….this is going to hurt…at least she admitted it was her fault. Now I am way more defensive and just assume that the car that just passed me is going to cut me off (especially if they are chatting on their cell phone drinking a Starbucks). Hopefully you won’t need surgery for your clavicle. Just make sure to follow you doctors’ orders. Good luck.

So sorry to hear you got hurt. What is the matter with a person that she would yell at someone she injured? It really doesn't matter whose fault it is - the right thing to do is try to help.

I hope you heal soon

My sincerest condolences for your injury. I wish you a speedy recovery.

I think the real problem is that drivers cannot comprehend how fast we are moving. They think they have time/room to pass and turn before we get there. They are mistaken of course, so all we can really do is anticipate that miscalculation and take appropriate defensive action.

How bout an introductory/mandatory course in basic physics for all drivers as an alternative? :)

I must say I don't think that would help. I mean, I know they are aware that a bike could go 100mph given the right scenario. Just like a car could be going 3mph, but probably isn't.

They need a course in our superior riding powers! And then they will be aware that yes, we do go 30mph down the road (ok well I don't but you know what I mean) and that not all of us average 6mph like some bikers do on beach cruisers :)

Guys, people just have to slow down, think and anticipate, like us bike riders do and they have to stop thinking about themselves all the time. It's called courtiousness and defensive driving. The latter is taught in driving school except that many forget whet that even means.

Giving me the gitters about my ride tomorrow 2 hours in traffic filled areas...

one of my teammates got hit hard on his bike but due to driver admitting fault he got a $2k upgrade on his bike, so there's always some good in any situation =)

Yikes! I hope that you heal quickly. I've had a few near misses with that situation. One of them the car bailed on the turn and stopped and I ran into it pretty hard but didn't really hurt anything... Grrrrr drivers....

I just got back from seeing the Orthapedic surgeon. I broke the clavicle in 5 spots but he said its all lined up pretty good and he recomended no surgery. He said I can run as soon as it doesn't hurt to run. He also said no bikes or swimming until he says it has healed enough... probably 6 weeks at least. Maybe I will get a tri in at the end of the season. Thanks for the good comments. Stay safe.

sweeet! only 6 weeks out. that's really good news. I'm a surgical nurse (i take care of people after surgery and pacu) and that would've sucked. now you don't have to deal with too much muscle and tissue healing.

at least you can run soon! I hope it all heals quickly.

This post made me furious when I first read it yesterday.

I agree with the others about being a defensive rider. We can't change the behavior of drivers, we can't make them smart or alert - all we can do is anticipate their stupidity.

Hope you get better soon.
