Ok, I am a begginer triathlete who is transitioning from mountain-biking and I have some money and I am looking to spend it wisely. I already have a heart rate monitor (a VERY basic one, tho), a mountain bike and good running shoes. Ignoring the actual cost of items, what would be the next purchases you would reccomend for me and in what order to you consider them useful and important?
Here's a list of thigns I think would be useful (feel free to reccomend more items)
-Advanced HRM (that records averages, pace, speed, etc...)
-Road bike (Thhey follow ITU rules where I live, so I am forced to buy a road bike)
-Bike trainer
-Aero Bars (for my road bike)
-Clipless pedals and Tri-specific bike shoes
-An "advanced" hydration system (the aero bars one, or the one that sits behind your seat)

Thanks for your advice, and while I know this is kinda of a hard question to answer, I appreciate all of your help.

-Road bike- always nice!
-Clipless pedals and Tri-specific bike shoes- allows correct pedaling technique and faster transitions.
-Aero Bars (for my road bike) get road bike specific ones, itll be easier to meet the ITU requirments.
-HRM- doesnt need to be too advanced. 5 zones, average, max. Thats all you really need
-Bike trainer- depending on climate and weather, this may beat out a HRM- cant train if you cant ride outside cause of rain or snow
-hydration system - Stick to frame mounts, maybe add the Aerobottle for up front.

Life is short. Play hard and get dirty doing it.

You positive a HRM is not that important?
I mean, I could upgrade my bike after this season.
(I am nto arguing against you, I am just trying to understand your reasoning) :D

A HRM is one of the most important training tools you can use, but all it really needs to do is read your heart rate. You really can't be very fast on a mountain bike, so the road bike is definitely the first thing you should be getting. You don't need to spend much on shoes and pedals. You can get some shimano 105 pedals that work fantastically for not too much money. You can also get decent road shoes for around $50. Having a tri-specific shoe isn't terribly important, but having a shoe that accomodates clipless pedals is.

A HRM is pretty important, but it's not the end all. As TriGator said, you dont really need to spend a fortune on the shoes and pedals- you could concievably get away with spending $100 for the set if you are thrifty.

As a newbie, you really should be taking it easier on the bike, a solid base on which to build on- you dont need to be hammering out intervals just yet. Rate of percieved exertion (RPE) will suit you fine for now.

The list seems to be oriented towards getting competitive in the sport. You could just get some high pressure slicks and gearing for your MTB, but youd be throwing money away if you really want to get into it. If youve never even done a tri before, see if your local bike shop will rent you a roadie to try your hand at racing on. I trained for my first 2 tris on a MTB, but rented roadies for races.

Life is short. Play hard and get dirty doing it.

Nayo,

Bike Trainer, Aerobars and hydrations system is not what you need at this point.

For a beginner in the sport I would recommend 1st of all going to amazon and buying a used (or new) copy of the Triathlete´s training Bible by joe Friel. If you already have a copy then go out and buy your road bike. Even clipless pedals can wait a bit.

I´m considering a trainer since the rain the last couple of days has been incredible but besides that I don´t see it like a top of the list priority.

Hyperactive Trifueler!!!! (I refuse to let the status go :p)

I took all of y'alls advice and I went out and got the TTB by Friel already. It rocks!
Thanks for helping me. I'll post a picture of my bike when I buy it :D
