Hello everyone,

Well I'm new to the sport (out of a dare) and can tell you I don't have a clue. What is it they say, "ignorance is bliss"?

Anyways, my race, sprint distance, is on July 28th. I've read a few books and such, but don't have a concrete training plan. That worries me the most, that I'm not getting the quality sessions in I need.

My friend and I have been putting in moderate miles on the bike and running. We've been running since December and biking since April. She's been doing the swim at a pool, but the lakes around here are still a bit cold for me to do any.

So, I'm going to be checking out the site for any help I can get.

Bring on any advice you have, I'll greatly appreciate it. :)

Welcome!
I'm from Ontario as well (Toronto). Which race are you going to do? I'm also a newbie, and haven't done any race just yet, but the training is going well. I'm not doing full tris, as I can't run, but I'm doing aquabike, and I'm planning to do a relay tri (swim and bike portion) at the Toronto Island triathlon in August.

From what I've read and done so far, here's an idea of what a training week should look like:
Monday - Rest
Tuesday - Short Run - Swim (Workout)
Wednesday - Short Bike - Brick short run
Thursday - Short Bike - Swim (Workout)
Friday - Short Run - Swim (Distance)
Saturday - Long Bike
Sunday - Long Run

As for open water swimming in the lakes in Ontario, ideally you need a wetsuit! Year long.

Good luck, keep it up, and let us know how it goes!

I forgot to mention, but the most important thing to get an efficient training is to use a heart rate monitor and train within specific zones. There is a lot of information on trifuel, on the web and in books for zone training.

Hi - Welcome to the world of Tri's.
There are beginner training plans here under the training section. Also there is http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/default.asp.
Need to get in the water and get some swim time in.
Also you should do several short (15 min) runs immediately after one of you bike sessions. You need to experience what your legs feel like after biking an hour or two and then run. The legs can feel really heavy - that will go away after you get going.
Be careful, these tri's can be addictive. Good luck!
