gears questions

The gain-ratios are always larger (and further apart) when you are in the “BIG” chain-ring. There are overlaps of course and you need to figure out what gearing strategy works for you depending on your riding style, terrain, distance, fatigue, etc.
Sheldon Brown has some good articles on gears, ratios, etc.

He also has an online calculator that shows gear ratios in several different formats. MPH at a given RPM is probably the most useful.

Hope this is what you are looking for.

That helps a lot, thanks Tbravo!

hey all-
i'm a beginning biker, and have been wondering about how the gear ratios change when you upshift or downshift on the front chainrings. I have a pretty good feel for how shifting on the rear changes things, so how does changing on the front chainrings relate to the rear? Sorry, i'm not good with the terminology, if someone who knows what I'm trying to ask could rephrase for me, that would be excellent. Thanks all!
