2008 World Championship
wow congratulations! all our qualification races for vancouver start in australia in november, and go through to the end of march. So "WHEN" i qualify (believing is the first step!) i'll see you over there, although you have less distance to travel!
dont get bitter, get better
UF I didn't know you were going navy what career field are you going into?
SWO Nuke....hence the end of real training. Those 80 hour work weeks are going to be fun! I heard that OCS destroys your running form, too, with all that slogging around in boots. Oh well, at least I'll get to ride my bike in some pretty cool places, albeit slowly. :D

Oh yeah I forgot you'll be an officer... Yeah you'll still get some time to run and ride :) us enlisted folks (read slave labor :) ) didn't get much time.
just kidding it's cool your doing in I SWO nuke is a wicked hard job I heard...
Congrats!
Every now and then I wonder what life would have been like had I gone the Academy and Navy-Nuke route I had originally planned.

Wow that's awesome :) Should be fun to get to do a big race like that, and a great ending! Although I thought there was a navy tri team, and you seem pretty talented (obviously with the worlds spot), so perhaps you'll find yourself there someday. Or just back whenever you can be... I don't imagine you'll succeed at staying too far from tri. And you better still be a Trifuel presence!

I know the army has their WCA program. A guy from Gainesville just made it a couple weeks ago....all I'd need to do is drop about 15 minutes from my Oly time to compete with him! Might be a little out of my league....;) Maybe the Navy has a not-really-that-fast-but-does-okay-as-an-age-grouper team.

There is the World Class Athlete program that caters primarily to those who can gain Olympic or professional slots. They are basically full-time athletes who retain military rank and pay grade. Then there are programs like All-Army which have certain requirements but you still work a full-time military job- ie: You're an infantry platoon leader but you happen to compete for the Army. Your selection, of course, is dependent upon your ability, deployments, and unit commander.
Bases also tend to have a lot of teams. I know at the Army 10-Miler there is an All-Army team along with teams that bases have set-up for competition.

Or start a navy tri club ;)

Congratulations! You are being contacted because you have earned a spot on Team USA for the 2008 Short Course Triathlon World Championships after your name was selected from the 2007 lottery.
!!!!!
I was 2nd at the Qualifier (Mideast Championships in Sylvania, OH) and the winner accepted her slot... I totally forgot that they do another lottery for roll-down people.
Wow! This totally makes my day!
The qualifications are weird for 2008 since the race is so early (it's actually before the national championship race....I'm sure there's a good reason for doing that, well, maybe not, but that's how it is :D). Anyway, they're going to have the final list by Dec 31st, and I just found out that I'm going! So I guess I'll be in Vancouver next June for one of my last races before the Navy sucks me up and puts an end to my competetive triathlon career (if you could actually call it that) in September. The jury is still out on whether or not I buy some of that silly Team USA gear (I might actually get a sweatshirt or something, though...it does look kinda cool ;)).
I say get the gear! You have worked hard and it would be cool to have the swag!!

Congrats, Carolyn! Looks like I'll be seeing you in Vancouver!

Great job, Carolyn! That's awesome!

Congrats on the vancity spot. I will be doing the OLY distance there as well. Hope your not in my AG! :> Any particular goals for worlds?
Ooooh. Congrats!

It's probably really hilly, so my goal is to not get last! :D

Hey, great job Matt! I remember earlier this year we were all discussing Nationals and the prospects of Worlds. I had signed up for the Portland Nationals as a just in case I didn't Kona qaulify at IMAZ. I still really want to go to nationals and Worlds but the schedule for '08, as you mentioned, is so wierd I'm going to do the 70.3 series instead.
Definatley get all the Team USA stuff! Also, I have a local tri friend here in Phoenix who is in the Navy and I believe there is a Navy Tri team, I've seen them at races. If you would like his contact info let me know and good luck!

That'd be great! I've tried to get stuff off the website, but all you get from clicking the triathlon link is "we're updating, check back soon." Of course, it's been like that for a long time! :D Can you PM me the contact info? It'd be cool to race for the Navy!

Matt,
I'm 99.9% sure the navy as a tri team since the Air Force team competes against them, yearly, go Air Force!
Here is a link to the world-class athlete program for the Air Force, I would imagine it's similar for the Navy
http://www.usafsports.com/WCAP.htm
Our coach has been on the AF tri team a few times now, and has told me if (really huge if) I can keep up my training my times are good enough that in a year or two (so will be in for a few years) I could make the team.
If you do well enough at the inter-service competition you can even get invitited to the world military games, where you go head to head with people from all around which would be totally wicked. best of luck to you and hopefully our paths will cross.

Check out my blog!
Any particular goals for worlds?
I don't think so. I should be in reasonably good shape by then, but I think I'll just enjoy the experience and try not to get last.
AZ,
I'd like to race on the Navy team, but the WCA program isn't happening. A guy I used to occasionally train with down here tried to get into the Army WCA program. He did a 3:57 half in Miami last year and I've heard of him running a 29-minute 10k off the bike.....he wasn't fast enough for them, so there's pretty much zero hope for me! :D
