Crystal River is a pretty unique little venue. They still some things the old way: timing is done by hand and paper, two wave start (male and female,) and cheap entry fees.
Race start was 7:30 on a wonderul morning. Clear with a slight wind out of the N/ NE. Line up on the beach for the big start with 100 +/- other dudes.
Course was a triangle shaped thing. Not quite pure triangle, but close to it. The middle of the swim takes you out past the protected cove, so theres some current there. I tried to swim harder than I did last week, and had a little success at that, but I still have a lot of work to do.
400m- 7:47 54/ 209
The transition areas are small due to the small size of the race, so theyre pretty quick. I was happy my rack was right in front of the Transition zone enterance. Helmet on, glasses, stuff my gel in the leg of my shorts, loose that gel running out of transition. Oh, well. Tape it to the top tube next time.

Bike is fiarly flat into the wind the way out with a very, very slight upward grade. Roads arent totally smooth, but I've raced on worse. Speed sensor wasnt working for some reason, so I had to rely on RPE and cadence. Legs didnt feel as loose as last week, but that was ok. Some drafting going on by the older crowd, but the lead guys were racing fairly clean. I just pushed it as much as I felt I could to keep the group in front of me in shooting range for the run. Got passed by maybe 3 people. I wasnt thrilled with my ride, but it wasnt bad enough to be mad over.
15 miles- 40:51 22.0mph 32/ 209
T2 was another fast affair, the biek course runs immediately parallel to the TA and wraps around it, leaving you with a hard U-ey followed immediately by the dismount line. Good to know about that in advance.

The run is flat and F A S T. Yow! I started out faster than normal cuse I was trying to pass this one dude who had gotten by me on the bike with about 3 miles left. Kept the pace up to pick off the guys I could see. Passed quite the few people, had a lot of fun doing it. My legs were protesting a bit, but I told em to shut up and hang on a minute, as I had a race to finish! Mile 1- 6:00
Right about the turn around, I managed to catch the biggest group of drafters- a group of 4 or 5 45 year olds with IM gear and such on. The also did the IM shuffle. During a sprint. Lucky me! As a I blew by em, I heard them commenting on how they wished they were 27 again, and how "if I was 27, I could go with him." I got some kicks out of that, but I had two more guys I could catch. One was close and I knew he wouldnt be a problem. The other dude was almost a half mile up the road, but wasnt going too fast.
Mile 2- 6:30- time to kick it up a notch. The legs were trying to negotiate, but I wasnt buying it.
Caught the closest dude and poured it on a bit while trying to determine if I really could catch this guy. I was closing on him, but would it be enough? Only one way to find out! Go time! Felt like high school again. I kept reeling him in, and reeling him in, and finally caught him with about 200 yards to go! Kick it up a notch to finish the job, eased off with about 50 yards to go when I hear someone one my opposite shoulder! Some other dude was trying to out sprint me to the finish! Good thing I do lots of strides and speed drills! A quick squeeze and I got him by one second. Whew! Turns out the dude was 39 and ran a 17:50! Yow!!
3 miles (- maybe 100 yards) 18:21 8/ 209
I posted a decent time capable of winning last years AG. But not this year!
15/ 209 OA 5/9 AG! Talk about a stacked AG! 2 of our guys were in the top 4. This is a shout out to my buddy Jeff. Dude is a new fireman, rides with me on Tuesdays and run occasionally. Doesnt swim much anymore due to limited pool access. While he used to be a stud college runner, he hasnt been training much. Dude goes out and blows out a 1:02 for 4th OA with a 3 mile of 16:24!!! The next fastest run posted was 17:07! Blows me away.
Once again, a fantastic race put on by the DRC Sports crew! I am looking forward to the Twilight Tri in July at the same venue! Sub 18:00 possible on the run? I hope so!
Life is short. Play hard and get dirty doing it.

Ha! Peoples' excuses really get old sometimes - I've seen plenty of 45 yr olds run fast. I might add - if you have the ability to explain why you can't "go with" someone during a 3 MILE RUN you're not running hard enough - 45 years old or otherwise!
Sounds like a fun race though. Thanks for the report, and great job!

The results aren't up yet, so I haven't been able to do a through analysis yet, but that was THE fastest race I have been in. No, the course wasnt short by any measurable distance.
I ran a 18:15 3 mile, but my run wasn't among the top for sure. My time was good enough for 15th overall, but only 5th in Age Group. Not too much in the way of drafting, a small groups of 40+ IMers that were there were a little close and side by side, but the Ref let em slide or just didnt get to bust em. That was ok, I caught em on the run.
Another solid event by the DRC sports crew.
They do the timing by hand, no chips, so when they finish the results I'll come back and add some good stuff.
Life is short. Play hard and get dirty doing it.
