Hello:)

I have been training for my first sprint triathlon. I'm hoping to get some input on the whole idea of getting out of the water... being sopping wet... and then getting on a bike...

What would be recommended for this transition outfit wise? I'm not a real classy outfitted person usually. I've been running in a wicking sport top and usually my wicking ankle length pants or shorts. I thought that I could probably pull of wearing my wicking sports top in the water which would dry quickly but what should I do for bottoms???

As this is my firt try at tri (silly joke) I'm not totally concerned about speed. Mostly comfort... which realistically go hand in hand:)

I look forward to hearing back!

Tri-Shorts! You can wear them for all 3 events. I like the DeSoto women's low rise ones best. Just wear some sort of tight wicking top and you'll be all set.

If you're doing the tri in Muskegon on July 1, there's a chance that I'll be there. Its on my list of potential C races that I'll sign up for at the last minute if I'm feeling good and have the time that weekend.

yeah, tri shorts are great. Most sprints don't have an easy way to completely change, and don't allow nudity in the changing area. I like the desoto ones as well... or the Pearl Izumi ones.

Important to get a tight fitting top (like catwood said) if you'll be swimming in it -- otherwise it drags in the water and generally gets in the way and annoying. You can also just swim in a sports bra and tri short, and then either stay that way for the whole race or pull on a top over the sports bra in transition. Um... that is assuming you are female... ;) If male you can just swim in the shorts and add a top in transition (note that some races do require some type of top). Be ready to have it be a bit tough to wiggle into the top in transition (since you'll be wet and it will stick to you). But if you are mostly concerned about comfort I find that one of the most comfortable ways :)

You are all fantastic! Thank you for the advice:)

I've just purchased a wet suit to make the Lake a bit less chilly. I got a half suit (goes to my elbows and knees). Was this a good investment? I swam in it yesterday and was warm but had a thought like "did I cheat myself by only getting a half one?" Prior to this I was swimming without a wetsuit so any warmth is a bonus. By the time of my first tri I will not need a wetsuit as our lakes will be warm.

I don't know of too many tri wetsuits that come in that design. Most are either fullsuits, farmerjohns (long legs, sleeveless) or 2 -piece stuff from De Soto.

Are you sure its not a shorty, which is usually used for surfing, skiing, warm water scuba, etc.?

Unlike shortys, tri wetsuits are designed to fit tighter, have materials placed to keep you in a proper body position for a front crawl swim, and have shoulders designed for swim movement. As a result, they can make swimmers considerably faster than swimming in just a swimsuit. A shorty deos not have those same advantages--I use a 3/2 fullsuit for scuba diving (same material and fit as a shorty, just with long sleeves and legs), and it is considerably less useful for distance swimming than my tri wetsuit.

You don't really need a tri wetsuit for just a sprint. However, they do help slower swimmers improve more than faster ones, and they do keep you warm if that's an issue. If you really want to try one, maybe rent or borrow one for a race and see how you like it, then buy if you ever plan to do longer races.

Thank you for your suggestions!

So I bought a pair of tri shorts. I swam in Lake Michigan today and did not feel like I really liked the feel of them out of the water. I am willing to give them a try and get used to them but I am concerned about having wet shorts and riding a bike.

An idea I had... what if I wore bikini bottoms that tie on the side. Then during transition I could put on a pair of my running shorts (built in undies) and untie the bathing suit so it can be pulled out from under the shorts. This idea sounds more comforting to me as I would be able to hop into dry shorts for the bike ride.

Crazy idea? Not possible in a race? Looking forward to your input:)

There's a lot of grabbing and pulling during the swim....they might be coming off a little earlier than you plan.

And then you'd have a flying transition as you ran there and pulled on the other shorts! Heh...

The bikini ideal might work if double/triple knotted, and it's a swimming bikini (not a tanning/hanging out one) with a tight waist -- otherwise just swimming will make it slide down a bit. But it will add transition time. So it will come down to how important it is to you to be as fast as you can be, and how much little bits of comfort are worth. Honestly, in a sprint bike, *and with a comfortable bike saddle* you'll be fine in tri shorts. It does feel odd at first, but as soon as you get used to the bit of a damp diaper feeling you'll be ok :)

i had similar concerns (though atleast being a guy I only had to worry about my bottom half) and you'd be really amazed how quick those tri shorts dry off. In a few of my events I was actually disappointed to have them dry off so quick as it was wicked hot and having wet clothes plus breeze b/c biking was fantastic!
