I just was looking at races in my area and there is a triple Ironman listed. Anybody ever done one? or know anybody who has done one?

usaultratri.com Links there to other events around the world...deccas, quads and such...I need to get through the Double first before I'll look at any of that!
In the world of ultra extreme endurance sports a double is no big deal...This sort of stuff, running walking and biking, swimming too, have been around since the 1800's.

just the training for these multi-iron events seems a little over the top...when would you have the time to put in the requisite training? it seems all-encompassing to the point of making the athlete become a hermit.

is there some threshold after ironman where you don't need to increase the training time? or do you do iron-type training and just gut out the difference in race time?

hats off to the accomplishment! but that will always be something i watch or read about...

Hermit? Hardly...If you are putting in 20 hour weeks training for an IM..it doesn't mean you are doing 40 hour weeks training for a double or triple....It's the back to back long workouts that are important.... My training schedule for the double has some big weeks, but they come in the form of ..say 150 bike miles Saturday and then a 50k run/walk on Sunday...at about HR level 1/2. Long hikes, back to back 120 mile bike days...the rest of the week is not much different than training for an IM...or a half for that matter.
Some folks are not cut out for that sort of thing,as some are not cut out for an IM..I don't know if I can do a double...But why not try?
I've talked with Double and triple vets and am under the wing of someone who has been there before and have learned that you can't train for an IM then gut it out...those that try it usually DNF (and an Ultra distance event is really about the finish. ) It's sort like the difference between a 1/2IM and the full...they are completely different animals.

i guess it sounds hermit-like because say you do the 150 miler (which takes what...7-9 hours?) plus whatever prep time (stretching, showers, changing, before and after), and i suspect a nap, or at least down time, and maybe a slow sit down recovery meal. it sounds like your day is done assuming it's done mostly during daylight hours. with back-to-backs on the weekend, the weekend is pretty much done, right? folks who can even accomplish those distances are probably pretty darn durable, but recovery time must be a factor too.

Anton, i'm in awe because that's a lot of effort and focus...i certainly wouldn't be out mowing the lawn that weekend! :) i'm pulling for you...good luck with your training!

side question: is a double done with two transitions or five? (i.e. is each discipline done all at once?)

For the event I'm doing...2 Transitions...
4.8 mile swim, T1, 224 on the bike,T2,52.4 run. 36 hour cutoff.
Some events do have you do a regular IM distance then start again.
Funny you should mention daylight hours...I have several rides on the schedule that will work in the same time frame as the race..so it will include night riding with a T run into morning.
Thanks for the vote of confidence...but I have to get there first...
so far so good.

yet another reason to hope I can be as cool as Anton... especially once I'm his age :) Someday I'd love to try it. I can't wait to hear how it goes for you Anton.

I have a hard time staying awake for 36 hours much less competing for that long. I guess it all goes back to the reference I make for other people. Some people ask me "is it hard to do an Ironman?" I respond with well have you ever driven you car for 13-14 hours (yes I'm slow) well imagine running biking and swimming that whole time. Is it hard YES is it do-able of course...
