I hope this hasn't been posted yet. I did a search on the forum and couldn't find anything on this subject.

Anyway I was perusing the net one day when I came across this little tid bit. The competition was a month ago but I thought some might be interested.

My wife's a Gator and I'm a Boat Schooler(USNA '84 grad for you non-navy types) so I was kind of proud we could best the mighty Gators in the team competitions.:D

Enjoy the read.....

Justine Whipple of the United States Naval Academy and Kevin Collington of the University of Florida won the individual women's and men's titles at the 2007 USA Triathlon Collegiate National Championship Saturday in Tuscaloosa, Alabama.

Whipple completed the Olympic distance event in 2:02:44, with a margin of 3 minutes 36 seconds ahead of runner-up Katie Ellis of Arizona State University (2:06:20), and another 2 minutes and one second ahead of third place Amanda Felder of UC San Diego (2:08:21).

The men's race was far closer, with Collington's 1:52:07 finish 33 seconds ahead of runner-up Steven Sexton of the University of California-Berkeley (1:52:40), and third place Ethan Brown of the University of Michigan another 14 seconds back in 1:52:54.

Nearly 1,000 athletes representing 77 colleges and universities from 43 states competed under sunny skies at the University of Alabama campus in Tuscaloosa. Almost 100,00 spectators, admittedly drawn to the home town Crimson Tide's spring football scrimmage, were on hand at USA Triathlon's largest ever collegiate championship.

Led by Whipple's second straight individual title, the U.S. Naval Academy also won the men's and women's team titles. The Naval Academy top women finishers totaled 27 points, with runner-up UC Berkeley at 40, and third place University of Florida at 44.

Whipple's first place led the Naval Academy women, followed by Amy Alexander's 14th place (2:17:24), Melisa Hough's 23rd place (2:20:45) and Morgan Kitchen's 36th place (2:24:00).

Runner-up UC Berkeley women were led by Marie Claire Lamb's 9th place (2:15:04), Lindsey Dal Porto's 22nd place (2:20:28), Robin Shaffer's 26th place (2:21:36), and Kelly Dunleavy's 42nd place (2:25:10).

Alexandria Lechner led the third place University of Florida women with an 11th place finish (2:16:06), followed by Kristin Donahue's 20th place (2:20:04), Jennifer Sanchez's 29th place (2:21:55) and Elly Kabboord's 43rd place (2:25:40).

The United States Naval Academy men took a narrow team victory over runner-up Michigan State University 49 to 52. The third place United States Military Academy men were just one point back with a total of 53, and fourth place UC-Berkeley just two points out of the medals with 55.

Derek Oskutis led the winning U.S. Naval Academy men with a 6th place finish (1:53:46), followed by Thomas Brown's 8th place (1:54:21), Ashley Preston's 38th place (2:02:57) and Erik Bates' 54th (2:05:21).

John Paul Severin led Michigan State with an 11th place finish (1:56:05), followed by Aaron Bachman's 15th (1:58:13), Matt Inch's 30th (2:01:24), and Gabe Harner's 48th (2:04:40).

Nicholas Dason led the United States Military Academy men's team to third with his 10th place finish (1:55:13), followed by Nicholas Vandam's 14th (1:57:36), Nicholas Sterghos's 33rd place (2:02:12) and Robert Sherry's 73rd place (2:07:28).

The Naval Academy also took the coed team title with 76 points. UC Berkeley finished second with 95 points and perennial collegiate triathlon power University of Colorado-Boulder took its only medal of the 2007 meet, earning a third place finish with 137 points.

Another 75 athletes competed in the alumni division, won by April Gellatly of the University of Georgia (2:18:49) and Bruce Gennari of the University of Alabama (1:57:59).

The University of Colorado-Boulder took the Team Spirit award, but instead presented it to the 20 members of the team from Virginia Tech, who had finished 21st of 34 teams in the general classification. Prior to the triathlon, a moment of silence was observed for the Virginia Tech students and faculty who were killed and injured in the tragic shooting on their Blacksburg, Virginia campus on April 16.

Just wait til next year. I'm helping get a UF freshman back into shape....well, just convincing him to come ride and stuff, really. Anyway, we'll have three guys (at least....possibly 5) under 2 hours. Plus, Justine's graduating. Kevin's coming back for a 5th year. Go Gators!

Actually, I'm a Navy fan, too.....just a bigger Gator fan. My dad was USNA '82, and my brother is '10 (just finished Plebe year, poor kid). I was supposed to be '08 since I was but a wee baby. However, I decided to have fun in college instead. Either way, I'm doing OCS after I graduate and going SWO Nuke (they're the ones who paid for me to have such nice bikes!) So here's the point of the story:

At Nationals I saw an Army guy about 100m in front of me with about a mile to go, so I pushed really hard (sub-6:00 last mile). Came up on him with 100m to go. All his Army friends were yelling to him to not get passed, but I ran the 400m in HS and outkicked him pretty badly....lol! I normally wouldn't put myself through that much pain for 85th place, but he was Army afterall.

My cousin's USNA '09 and on their swim team, but we're hoping to get him to do his first tri this summer. I saw both Navy and Army's teams compete last September at The Nation's Triathlon (duathlon) here in D.C. and both were very impressive.

Boy this is a bad thread for me, Not only am I a die hard canes fan and hate the Gaytors, but I'm also a '99 USMA Grad. I am glad the squid pulled it out though. I am also thrilled to see Nick Dason finished 10th after spending a year with me in Iraq and just returning in NOV.

Hooah Robj3411! Go Army! Right now I'm in ROTC (...yes, Army boyscouts...) but I'll be getting my commission when I graduate next spring. I'm also planning on trying to make the All-Army team after BOLC and OBC, so we'll see how that goes.

Yes I was a bit disappointed to see Navy win everything but they have some crazy fast kids. One of my close friends from HS goes there and all he does is PT, so they have some serious talent and work ethic. Justine passed me about 1.5mi into the run and surprised the hell out of me because I thought I was alone and running well but she was HAULING.

I've spent my entire adult career in the Navy and Federal Government now stationed overseas and I'm glad to see Army and Navy continues to attract quality people like MaverickUNC and UFTriGator - thanks for volunteering to pick up the torch. And to Robj3411 - God Bless and thanks for the sacrifice.

UFtriGator I'm really impressed!!!! SWO Nuke? Not only a hell of a triathlete but smart too...WOW!!! I'm sure your Dad is very proud!

Your dad was my second classmen when I was at Canoe U. Probably flamed on me left and right. You don't know by chance what company he was in? I was in seventh company.

Ask him if he had any football or baseball players in his company. I played from '80-'83. What did he do when he graduated and what's he doing now? Did he stay in or get out? Just curious.

Anyway good luck at Nuke school! When do you go? Gonna be hard riding that tri bike around the carrier deck....you'll get dizzy!

Just for your information my wife grew up in Gainesville and her Mom, Dad and two sisters still live there. Off of Williston rd, just west of I-75. Her Dad and sister are Cardiologist's at Shands. My first daughter was born at Shands when I lived in Haile Plantation.

Again...good luck!

Go Navy beat Army!!!!
