i am doing my first triathlon this august and as a student i am trying to minimize my expense for it. I already have a bike, goggles, running shoes, and biking shorts.

On my limited budget what else would you advise that i buy to make my race easier? particularly i am wondering what is best to race in, and if i need a wetsuit (60-74 temp water)

thanks
edit- i am racing the 1/2 im

Rent a wetsuit, just in case the water temps drop, buy your own personal stick of bodyglide and you should be set.

Oh and don't skimp on tires/tubes. There's no excuse for DNFing due to a shredded old tire or no inner tube/pump/patch kit.

Greatness is only achieved by those who perpetually raise the expectations of themselves to the point where it ruins their life.

thanks!
i thought of a few more specific questions
what kind of helmet should i get?
for the biking and running legs is it best to wear biking shorts? or to wear swim tights?

If you have a jammer-type swim suit, you can just wear that for the whole race, well for a sprint, but your doing a HIM. So get tri shorts, or they might have changing tents for a half. As far as helmets go, pretty much any helmet from one of the major brands (bell, giro, etc) will do. Just get your favorite color and most triathletes prefer helmets without a visor.

Spend the $5 on some elastic laces. Theyre worth every penny.

Nice rolling tires and tubes go a long way. http://www.biketiresdirect.com/productdetail.asp?p=MIP2R Cant go wrong with these.

For helmets, shop online as well. You can normally get helmets for around 40- 50% off. I've never paid retail for a helmet. I like Bell's fit the most, but for others Giro works better. Hop into your local sporting goods store and try the most expensive helmets from both brands on. The other models from the same company will fit the same.

Tri shorts are a must. I prefer PI's shorts. Others like different brands. Try a few brands on if you can.

And a running visor or hat is a must in my book.

Good luck.

Life is short. Play hard and get dirty doing it.

I would advise that you spend $60-$100 to enter another shorter race first. Just from doing my first 1/2IM as my third tri, I'm glad I had two other ones under my belt just to know what the whole thing felt like. Often times experience can be more valuable than any piece of gear you can buy. Good luck to you.
