i recentlty bought a pair of cycling shoes.at the shop i ran into a guy who is more experienced than me told me that the shoes should be tight.then the shop personel told me you want finger width between the tip of the shoe and your toe.that your feet swell up and the size of socks.i ended listening to the shop personel and got the loose fitting.did i get screwed over?

no, If mine are too tight my feet go numb after about 2 hours. I prefer them loose.

Loose is better...your feet will swell, especially on hot days...

I wear them as loose as I can get them. It helps delay the numbing in my toes that inevitably happens.

When he said tight, he might have meant that they should be clamped down. You need a little space at the end of the shoe since your feet will swell a little bit during longer rides, but you don't want them flopping around because that will cause you to lose power. The most direct power transfer is when the shoe moves just as much as your foot. If the shoe is loose, you might lose a quarter inch on each upstroke (or thereabouts) that isn't propelling you forward (power loss). Basically, the shoes you got are fine, just pull the fastners as tight as they'll go. If the shoes fit right, that shouldn't cause numbness and you'll have better pedaling efficiency.
