Training and drinking alcohol

When you guys train for an IM, do you ever drink alcohol? If so, approx. how much / how often? Is a 6, 8, or 10 oz glass of wine every day or so bad? Why or why not?

I like to enjoy a glass of red wine just about every day and was wondering if I should cut it out, cut back or what..?

Bill Philips, Founder of EAS says in his book "Body For Life" that a drink a day is ok. However, training for a "Body for Life" isn't quite the same thing as training for an IM.

I hear of the health benefits of red wine but wonder if it detracts from endurance training..?

Thanks for any feedback,

Dave V

You'll run into the tri-monks who eschew all alcohol.
You'll run into folks who really knock em back after a race.
I think everything in moderation is ok...I will avoid drinks a few days before a race but usually have a beer with dinner other days...your preference, but i think one or two a day is ok...(For the record one is fine for me...two and I'm a mess...quite the cheap date!)

Friday and Saturday nights I usually have a beer or two or a glass of red wine. It is kind of a big glass though. I don't think it has a negative effect on my training in the least bit. Race weeks I abstain.

I continued to enjoy a glass ot two of wine in the evening all through my training for IM, I especially like one good stiff drink the night before a race to settle me down to get some sleep! :)
It has absolutley no effect on my perfromance. One word of caution: Don't drink WHILE training, you might spill something ;).

Like the others. I too have a glass or two of wine or beer each night kinda thing. One of my favs is to take the multi vitamin with the wine :D Heck, a glass or two a day of alcohol (red wine) has been proven to be good for you AND if you eat correctly it's good for loosing weight.

Bryan, I agree with you about a glass or so the night before a race. It does make you hit the pillow better and curbs the anxiety. Also, it's great for the days where you are not that sleepy (far and few for us though with all the training we do), before bed a glass or two really makes you fall asleep fast.

I have been fortunate to train and compete with some of the best alpinists, ultra runners and triathletes out there. Hands down the best athlete I have ever known smokes a lot of pot, drinks a lot of beer, and eats a lot of pizza.

The keys to his success are focus, ambition, effort, talent, dedication, and drive. If you have those things it doesn't matter what you eat or drink.

Triathalon is an activity with no consequences, its all about having fun and getting a little exercise. So why not imbibe a little?

Sure, he's feeling no pain! :p
I agree success is much more about dedication, effort, and attitude than having a beer. Triathlon DOES have consequences, however, be that good or bad, it's a lot like life that way.

I'm not a drinker, but my boyfriend is a big fan of beer. He often has 1-2 a night, until it gets close to big races of the year (last 3ish months before them). Then it's limited to 1 at home (and not every single night), but mostly just when we go out -- it becomes a bit more of a treat. A big part of that is just for weight reasons though, as in those months he has to work harder to stay at race weight.

As for the smoking, drinking, etc and still being a good athlete -- yes, if you have the drive and talent not a problem. However, I once heard a great quote. This was a sub-5 min miler who smoked about a pack a day: "Somestimes I wonder how fast I'd be able to go if I didn't smoke so much". Yes, he smoked and it wasn't something he was going to chance. Yes, he was a damn good athlete still. But yes, he was aware that it did mean he cut his potential down a bit.

I would think that smoking a pack a day is a whole world different from having a glass of wine as far as athletic perfromance is concerened! I would most certainly agree that that type of indulgence would be a major negative.
Everything in moderation, or as close to it as possible. :)

Oh I wasn't trying to say that it was the same as the wine... it was more a response to the person who said the best althete they know smokes a lot of pot and drinks a lot -- that isn't why he's fast, it's the rest of the package. And he could be a better athlete yet without it. Then it comes down to priorities.

As a climber myself, I have seen those great climbers...smoke lots of pot, drink...and stuff like that...
Personally, I am not envious about that type of consumption...
I think Triathlon, mountaneering, ultramarathon, and so on...for me is a life style...and positive stimulus to keep my body healthy...in good conditioning.
As a former smoker....gosh!!!!! I wish have never done it....
Years ago...I used to walk 5km and feel like going around the world....
Now...tabaco free...my PR is under 20 min....
As far as alcohol...I also drink very little...not by choice, but because a medical condition. Every once in a while I might have a beer while watching a ball game or something. Now...some people like Red5 have good tolerance...and that is fine...
It is very true that wine has lots of antioxidants, helps to prevent high blood preassure, aid to control lipids in hour blood, no question about it...
Everything in moderation is fine...wine...a beer...some pizza...a good burguer...even a Quarter Pounder...
As far as smoking...mmmmm, I just wish I have never done it before

Dr. Rios makes a good point. Alcohol effects people very differently. Some can have a drink and barley notice it's effect, other are a cheap date! Without a doubt, alcohol is a metabolic toxin. It also is a duiretic and can cause moderate dehydration. On thing I try and do to mitigate those effects is to make sure that I end my evening well hydrated if I have had a drink. I make sure not to have a drink within 2 hours of going to bed (which is 8pm for me) and have lot's of water or diet tonic and lime, a favorite little treat I like that's no calorie and has some sodium. Reminds me of my single days pounding vodka tonics with no guilt!
Oh, and I used to be a social smoker as well!

No Consequences? You mean like accidents?..I started climbing in 1968 and have seen a fair share of accidents and deaths. Alpine,bigwall..you name it...none of which were as gruesome as the biking road accidents I've seen that involved injury and death...yes,even during races.
I can think of four specific climbing deaths directly related to alcohol or drug use...and that doesn't count the deaths of older climbers who lived a life of excess...dying early because of cancer or a trashed liver! I grew up in the 60's and early 70's...I know what happens to folks when they party too much...
I'll continue to imbibe a little...and maintain a health lifestyle...and lad...it matters big time, later in life, what you eat and drink at your age.

I think the title of my tri-blog says it all... ;)

It helps to have my body mass. A night of drinking that would put normal people in bed for the entire next day doesn't even keep me from getting up in the morning to run.

Yeah? I lived in a frat house last semester. I could take you. I actually think a few beers (like 6 or 7) the night before a long ride actually helps.....carb loading! The nights that see a case and a half slow me down a bit, but there's nothing like 3 mile run to cure a hangover.

I average 5 bottles of wine a week. And that's just the wine. ;)

Do I smell the makings of the First Annual Trifuel beer-bong contest? :D
