So I am BRAND new!

I have a bike.... Atrek 7000 Mtn Bike from 6-7 years ago sat in garage the entire time! Has new miles only from last few weeks. (not mine but similar http://jake.typepad.com/blog/files/my2ndtrek7000.jpg )

Broke my neck and back JUST after buying so it NEVER got used.

I want to do a mini-tri with an 11 mile ride....

I can do that on this bike no problemo...

I really do not want to drop $1100 on a new bike for my 1st race ya know!

So will it work? be accepted?? Will I be the laughing stock? shunned by other racers? forced into seclusion?

I am learning of the advantages of a road bike but for now for me this works...will it work for the race???

What the heck I'll be in the clydesdale anyway!

What about renting bikes do all races have places or do i just need to check out the local shops????

Thanks for your help....

You'll be fine on it, although of course not super competative. If it is a local race, and a lot of new people are there, you won't be the only mtb person, either. Some races even have a mtn bike division (like clydesdale) for those racing on an mtb.

Another thing to look at is making your bike a bit faster by putting new, slick (unlike the bumpy ones on most mtbs) tires on it for a bit of speed.

If you want to rent, talk to local bike shops and see what they say. If you have a tri club in your area, post a message and see if anyone in the area has a bike you could use. The hard part of this route is you won't necessarily know going in how comfortable you are on that bike, or how it handles. But it can be a better choice than an mtb.

Haha... ok, I just saw where you are :) Orange County. I used to live down there... now I'm by Pasadena. What is the tri you want to do? How tall are you? We have a number of bikes around...

You'd be surprised at the bikes people will ride in races. Yours will fit right in.

Road bikes are nice and can usually be rented for $30/ day, but I'd jsut use your bike for a couple races. Maybe get some new, slick high pressure tires. Those will make the going easier.

Go watch a tri before you race. See how things are done and the different types of people and bikes out there. Its a neat thing.

Life is short. Play hard and get dirty doing it.

I did my first season on a mountain bike with road tires. It was great passing a lot of people on much nicer bikes (especially the 3 guys who were making fun of my bike in the TA:D )

you'll be fine, I always see MTB on the shorter races. I'm jumping on the bus with everyone that you should get some road tires on the bike.
