I'm kinda looking for some ideas for commuting to work. This is national ride your bike to work week after all. I live a good 15 miles away from work, but sadly I have to wear a suit. Any clever ideas out there? I know at some point someone came up with a brilliant way to pull this off. :)

what I do with my uniform (AF blues don't mix well with biking either) is I'll leave a complete set at work and then just hop in the shower when I get there put on the uniform, and then just change out when I leave. For a week just take 2-3 shirts and pants in on say sunday, then pick them up/swap them out the following sunday. If you don't have access to a shower I've heard baby whipes work ok.

My husband did the same thing for 7 years. He'd drive typically on Mondays - to bring in fresh shirts/suits and take home the old stuff. Then he'd bike the other four days. He also had an office with a door.

Right now, I'm in the cube world so I can't leave a week's worth of clothes in the office. So, I have a bag at work with all the shower gear including hairdryer, makeup, etc...) and then on days that I ride I just carry my work clothes in a backpack (folding carefully that morning).

I'm lucky that the Y I swim at is less than a mile from my office. I ride in and shower there, then continue on to the office. As for packing I use one of these:

Works well for a dress shirt and pants.

i don't have "adult" luggage (just a huge ski bag or backpack) and when i travel, pressed clothing can take a beating...but i learned:

keep those plastic bags from the dry cleaners
put your pressed clothes into the bags
carefully/loosely roll your suits or shirts
put them into the center of the bag with other smaller squishable things around them

the pressed items come out pretty darn well.

disclaimer: i haven't tried this on a commute yet, but maybe someone can tell us if it works the same in a smaller backpack or pannier...

Hubby and I commute--him 20 miles each way , me only 8. He need to dress nicer than I ( I can wear shorts, sweats etc--casual software company) but he cannot go that casual. He uses the eagle creek packing folders as well and carries a timbuk2 messenger bag (so do I--its water proof and big enough for everything).

I have a locker at work in the gym downstairs where I keep my shower stuff. I keep a few pairs of shoes under my desk in my cube. Every so often I drive to work, drop off a clean towel for showering and food(soup, tuna etc) so I dont have to carry as much to work. You could live for a month out of my desk drawer.

You will be amazed at how great you feel after riding for a while--every morning is great, and riding home is a wonderful de-stresser.

I've always worked at a place with locker rooms and showers, so it hasn't been an issue, but my hubby will take his nice clothes in a flat bag and change there.

I don't ride every day.. But maybe once or twice a week.. All I do is plan the day before and take in an outfit/shower gear, leave it at work that night so it's all ready for me when I ride in the next day. And then I take it home the following day when I drive again. Commuting doesn't have to be all or nothing.. Even if you just ride once a week it's both good for you and the environtment!

I start my new job (well not new just different job in same company) next week and I'm planning on commuting the 12 miles every day, or at least as much as I can. I no longer have to wear a suit. (I get to wear the good ole brown uniform of a UPS Driver) so it should be a lot easier to transport my clothes. Thanks for the advice and I have been shopping around for a garment bag that I can carry comfortably on my road bike.

Another thing, if you're just starting out or have a long commute, you can drive in on the first day bringing clothes and stuff (have your bike on the car), then ride home. The next day you ride in and drive home. It's like a half-time bike commute. I used to do this when I was a working mom and didn't have time to do my11-mile commute both ways anymore.
