How many is too much??
Its really gonna depend on you. I know some people who race sprints almost every weekend. Others race once a month or less.
Its all really gonna dpend on your training plan, fitness level, recovery ability, and desire to race.
You should really only be racing during the peaks of your training plan. Base, build 1, build 2, peak, base, build, etc.
Life is short. Play hard and get dirty doing it.
My fitness level I think is ok and I seem to recover very quickly. I am still trying to piece together a good training plan since I will be doing tri's this summer and also training for a 160 some mile bike ride across the state in a day.
Don't forget the money issue. at least for me, a student, it is tough to afford a lot of 50-70 dollar races, plus the upkeep of my ride, plus the things that are not included in the race fee (food, gas, etc.)
I know, the money is a thing too, but they are so much fun and we only live once right!!
So long as you are recovering, race as much as you would like to and can afford to. For me, I can race sprints every weekend and oly's every other weekend without accumulating fatigue. Sometimes I race more frequently than that (try doing a sprint on Saturday and then another on Sunday), but then I need more recovery afterwards. I love racing - I did 10 tri's last summer (7 sprints, 3 olys). I race collegiate cycling beginning in april, tri's over the summer, and xc in the fall. Then get in 5 months of winter base/weight training. Racing is so much fun!
Sounds good to me. I would like to try a Oly race here towards the end of the summer but all I can seem to find around the Indianapolis area are sprints.....
Hey, I'll be at Valpo doing math research this summer so if they let me get out and race on weekends I'll probably be doing some of the same races you'll be. One that's a possibility for me is the Evergreen Lake Tri on July 21 in Hudson, IL which is 3 hrs away from Indianapolis...
There are a fair amount of oly's in the first half of the summer that I've done before in the chicago area, but not the 2nd half aside from Chicago which I'm sure is full already...
Thats cool. I will have to look into that one. I know I am going to be doing some sprint tri's. I have one coming up on June 10th in shelbyville, and I am also going to be doing the sprint tri's at eagle creek. I have never done an open water swim before so that will be my biggest problem. Plus the fact that i don't know where I could even practice that at!!

I am new to the sport and competed in my first sprint tri in April. I had a question for everybody out there. I really enjoyed it and wanted to do many more this summer, but I didn't know how much time was needed in between the sprints, and what training would look like for those weeks in between. I am used to training for mini marathons and used to having a training schedule. Since I am wanting to do many tris this summer, and some of them are just 2 weeks apart, what would be good for training?
I am also going to be training for the RAIN ride this year. The Ride Across Indiana. Its a bike ride from Terre Haute to Richmond.
Any suggestions so I don't over do it?
Thanks!!
