It is time
IM Wisconsin (Madison, Wi) is pretty close. Great venue and race.
Congrats on making the decision. :)

Sounds like you'd be open to an Independant race...that it wouldn't have to be a corporate IM. I think Indies are a great option and often provide a better experience for the first timer.
trifind.com has a link to a list of all the Iron distance races in the US and Canada. There is one in IL and one in KY other than IM Louisville.
For Ironman Corporate races... ironman.com. of course.

how early do you register for the corporate events? I noticed that all the 2007 events are good and sold out. The Illinois independent race sounds like a good time but I would also like to try IMWI. Thanks
Also I am looking for some more advice on whether you folks think I can pull off an IM by September 15. My last HIM of the year is in the middle of August so I would have plenty of time to prep. My swim shouldnt be an issue. My bike is usually 2-3 hours and my runs are around an hour. If you think I can do it then it may just have to happen in 2007

The Ironman brand events sell out VERY fast -- many of them the same day as it opens. A few take a bit longer, but each year they go faster as well.
If you want to just complete, you could probably do it (not too pretty, and a bit painful I would think). However, if you want to be at your best for it I recommend waiting til 08. There is a LOT of base miles to get in during build up, and for a September race training you'll already be out of base training.
This does also depend on your background: have you ever done a marathon? Have you ever done a century? How did you feel after those? etc.

I have two marathons under my belt. the first wasnt pretty and the second was fairly comfortable.
I have done a couple centurys but each year I do RAGBRAI. which is a week long bike ride across IA which averages 70 miles a day for 7 days.

Well if you think you can do them back to back you do have some miles in your legs. You'd be missing some of the prep training, but you'd probably be able to finish. Assuming you can swim it, too :)
I'm not saying don't go for it, but personally, one of the things I remember most about my first IM was all the prep and training and nerves, and I wouldn't want to have missed all that :)

swimming is pry going to be the easiest part for me. I would love to get an IM done this year, but $285 is a lot of money to drop on a race now and then have to drop out because I wasn't ready.
On the other hand when I ran my first marathon I signed up 3 months before and that motivated me to really do some serious training. Maybe the IM could have the same effect.

AS some folks are fond to say...there isn't much difference between HIM and IM training. You'll have to get in more long rides (5-7) hours and runs up to three hours. With an HIM in mid August you'll have to look at the taper...three weeks is standard for an IM..so really you won't have much long distance prep between August and September...technique,intensity...sure, but it will be time to start recovering for the IM....
Look at some good IM plans and gauge where you are now.
I think it's do-able for you...

There is a small independent iron distance race in Ottawa, Ontario
called The Canadian held on the first weekend,Saturday, in September. Somersault Productions is the race management team. They have done a bunch of races over the years and have a good organization. The bike is a multiple out and back on a closed highway on the city outskirts and along a canal which is really very pretty and the run is on a paved bike path along side
the canal. Nice start to an IM career. Swim is just fine.
Entry fee is low, good support and you would probably only need spend two nights in Ottawa before heading back home after the awards brunch. The race doesn't have all the IM hoopla but not everyone needs all that. There is a half, oly and sprint all happening that day so you are not out there alone.
There is a very similariron distance race in Montreal, Quebec in mid-Sept. called the Esprit Triathlon. This too is happens with a half, oly and sprint tri going on. This race has been around for almost 20 years now and is a good "starter" intro to endurance triathlon. Very good race management here too.
Good luck
I am currently looking at the Great Illini race. I like the idea of there only being 200 people on the race; means I'll be out there by myself most of the day. I still haven't made up my mind but I am leaning towards doing it.
Thanks for all the advice, and thanks for the happy birthday! =)

Alright folks, I have made the decision that I am ready to tackle an IM. Having done many smaller races and 2 HIM this season I have decided that 2008 is my year.
My question is.... I live in eastern Iowa (its the small state in the middle with all the corn) and I really dont have the monetary capabilities to travel far. (no way I could afford a flight or more than a 2 or 3 day hotel stay, usually like to camp before the smaller races) So what race do you all recommend? Originally I thought about IMAZ because I have some family just outside Phoenix, but not sure I could afford the flight, plus it is so early in the season that I would have difficulty peaking anytime before late June.
So let the suggestions fly, honestly I really don't care if it is a big race, I'm going after a sub 12 hour time, I don't care if there are 1000 people racing or 10. Any ideas? I'm open to them all
