Should I wear a wetsuit?
Hey everyone,For my first sprint of the year I wore one and was very fast....for me. This Oly coming up I'm worried about the longer distance and would really like the extra "help" a wetsuit gives me....the extra confidence, bouyancy and speed.

There's your answer. Where I can I always wear one. I don't usually do sprints but in my Olys I wear them. Unless you are on the podium the confidence, additional speed and buoyancy (esp if you are an average or below avg swimmer) are sefinitely woth the extra 30seconds removing it at T1.
Wear it!! If you are allowed then why not if it makes you quicker which it undoubtedly will!!
I wear one any time it's legal. If you own one and are comfortable in it, I would say go for it. Nobody will question your manhood for wearing it in 72 degree water.
Conventional wisdom says that wetsuits help slow swimmers the most, advanced swimmers the least, but they do help almost everybody go faster.
The only time I did not choose to wear a wetsuit was a race last summer where the water was over 78, but racers could wear one if they didn't want to be considered for overall/AG awards. Not that I am EVER a podium threat, but I chose to go without for practice purposes in case my A race that year was also too warm.
I am doing my first sprint in August in Seattle and I need a wetsuit. Can I tag on a question to this one? Has anyone seen the hyperfx by us divers? My husband found quite a deal on it and since this is my first one I would like to keep the major dollar investment low- until I become completly addicted :)
Anyone have any advice on this suit for me?
US divers?...sounds like a diving wet suit..?
There is a huge difference between a tri suit and suits for diving and what not...mostly being that tri suits have much more freedom of movement and are cut for swimming...I never have, but know of folks who raced their first races in diving suits and didn't have a good experience...
Have you explored renting?

The ad shows someone surfing....seems the layers are the same as the ones I have seen for tri's. I want to be careful because you do get what you pay for and I really want this to be a good experience. It is on Costco.com if anyone could check it out.
Surfing wetsuits are still not great for tris -- the big difference will be the shoulder construction. Surfing suits are made to keep you warm, not to let your shoulders work like tri ones do. I'll second Anton's renting recommendation. Many places will also sell off rental suits at the end of the season, so you can try it and race in it this year, and if you are hooked get it at the end of the season.

unless you're really going for a PR or something, you could save your money. swimming in the ocean, you'll have a lot of buoyancy. you could be faster with the suit, but you could also get a crappy fit, not put it on right, have trouble getting it off, or several other problems.
however, it sounds like you had a great experience in the past, and if I felt that good about a suit for the sprint, I'd do it again. Just hope it doesn't get too warm!

Hey everyone,
I'm doing my first Oly tri, ever, next weekend and was wondering whether I should wear a wetsuit. The water temp will be about 72-75 degrees. I know if the water temp is below 78 degrees wetusits are allowed but does anyone actually wear one if the temps that warm?

TriGator made a comment awhile back about St Athony's race director measuring the water temp and trying to get the temp down below 78 degrees. Is that so swimmers can legally wear a wetsuit??? Do most of you all wear wetsuits when allowed or is considered wimpy??? Do the wetsuits actually make you faster or was I just imagining my lightning fast speed???
Thanks for the advice
