How would you train for this scenario??
go for the Oly -- it's on the same course as nationals and it's got a wider margin of entry
for both races, many locals are gunning for a slot and it may be easier in the longer distance despite your down time...
[i was planning on getting out there to cheer, but have a last minute family commitment to honor...i'll be cheering from afar!]
good luck!!
and if you've got a good base up the 2 weeks off shouldn't do you too much harm. Just do some key sessions & speedwork etc over the next 9 days and do a mini taper leading into the race. You'll probably surprise yourself with feeling much better by having had the break!
I would also recommend the oly. Two weeks off shouldn't affect your time too much, but I think it would hurt your sprint time much more than it would an oly. good luck at nationals

Go for the Oly Ironmom.
in the end it would be harder to get into first place of the sprint than 5 of the oly.
Hyperactive Trifueler!!!! (I refuse to let the status go :p)
I'd lean toward going for the sprint.
The problem with those "Special Qualifiers" that qualify the top 5 in each AG is that the competition is at a much higher level than at standard USAT races, so I wouldn't be so sure the Oly will be easier to qualify at.
Down here there's a special qualifier (CapTex - oly) coming up and, judging by last year's times, 5th in my AG will probably be around 2:10-2:11. I just qualified for Nats by winning my AG in a sprint with a 1:07, which is easier to do than a 2:11 oly.
no advice here... but best of luck with either one!

I've got two dilemmas to figure out, and would love any input.
#1: I'd like to qualify for Age Group Nationals this year since they're in Oregon where I live. I've qualified several other years so it's not out of the question. However, I didn't know they were going to be here until recently and now there's only one race I can get to to qualify. There's an Oly and a Sprint race. The Oly qualifies top 33% or 5 from each age group, the Sprint qualifies top 10%. I've unfortunately been sick and then on vacation, leaving me feeling undertrained to go hard in an Oly. Also, the course is hilly, especially on the Oly run. It's a great course for me on the bike (I've done very well on this course before), but tough on the run because I'm not a light runner and hills cost me. So I'd probably do better in the sprint, but would most likely have to win my age group to qualify. I'll feel like dying on the Oly, but might have better odds, however I'll probably be going slower. Thoughts on which course I should do?
#2. Due to the fact that I was sick (which is pretty unusual for me) and then went on a vacation where I had no time to train, I've done almost nothing for 2 weeks. This race is in 12 days and we all know the last few don't count. I've always felt prepared training-wise before and followed my own plan. Now I feel a bit derailed and wondered if folks have advice on what to do with a pretty short time to do it in! Previous to getting sick, I was doing about 13 hours a week in tri-specific training.
I feel pretty well-prepared for the bike, especially since I completed a 4-race time trial series recently and won my category (Cat4 Women!!) and I've aced this bike course before. The swim is never an issue for me. I'm concerned about the run, and wondering what I can do to get myself ready in very little time for a course that's never been easy for me (Hagg lake if anyone is familiar with it, it's where the Nationals will be too).
