Qualifying for USAT Nationals?
I am registered to go to Nationals this June in Portland...but I have decided to not go. I had originally intended to do the race and qualify for Worlds if I didn't qualify for Kona at IMAZ. Since I am going to Kona now, I won't be going to Worlds so my whole motivation to go is no more.
It does look like a very fun event and I will definatley go next year as I don't plan on any IM racing in '08.

Of course it's 'effing hard, it's IRONMAN!
Is qualifying top 33 or 10 percent by age-group?
Googles, Out.
The Battle does not always go to the stronger or faster man,
Because sooner or later the man that wins
Is the man that thinks he can.
Most races it's 10%, but at regional championships and certain qulaifier races (you can find out which races those are here) are 33%.

Oh, and there are a bunch of us from UF going to Portland. A couple of us are planning on going to Hamburg, too, but most don't feel like maxing out their credit cards (I'm going...I've never been to Germany, and racing there would be more fun than a tour bus).
Also, for Vancouver in 2008, you need to have qualified and registered by Dec. 31 since 2008 Worlds are so early (June 15, '08) and the National Championship will probably be after that, which is why it's different next year. But because of that, if you win a regional championship this year or place top 8 at nationals, you qualify for 2008 Worlds. 2007 Worlds is still top 16 at Nationals, though.

Sorry , say that again. Are Worlds in Vancouver next year and how do you qualify if they are before Nationals?

Yes, it's top 33 percent "age group finishers" for special qualifying races, or top 10 percent regular USAT events.
I don't know if I'll go to the nationals, but it's nice to qualify, anyway.

My bad....2007 is Hamburg on Sep 1, 2008 is Vancouver on June 15. What I know so far is that for Vancouver you have to win a regional championship this year or go top 8 at nationals this year. They said they would have the complete Team USA roster done by Jan 1, 2008. This doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me, so there's got to be another way of qualifying, I just don't know what it is yet. I sent an email to USAT this morning asking some questions, so I'll let you know when I get a response. They're usually pretty good about responding quickly, so maybe tomorrow.

Great, thanks. I would love to go to Vancouver next year, that would be fun but I just don't feel like going to Portland this year. Maybe I can find another race to qualify..

Now that I found out Im qualified, Im thinking of going, its only a 8 hour drive.....
I will be at the portland nationals this year since its right in my backyard. We should have a trifuel get together before, anyone interested?
If I end up going I'm in.
It should be after the race....with beer.

I'm hoping to qualify. I've qualified in other years but never gone because they're always out of state. Now they're in my backyard, but there's only one race left that I can get to to qualify. So we'll see how it goes. If I end up making it, a TriFuel meetup would be great!

After the race it will be, there is a great huge pub (mcmenamins ) a short ways away from hagg lake. Ironmom, what race our you planning on? Im at the hagg one this month and blue lake next month.

Anyone have a goal of qualifying for USAT Nationals, or have you ever attended such an event?
Some "special" qualifiers, like the Smith Mountain Lake Sprint in Virginia, accept the top 33 percent of finishers, so qualifying is within reach of some of the middle-of-the packers, like myself.
For most USAT events, only the top 10 percent qualify, which is significantly tougher and out-of-reach for most folks.
