Calories on the bike....

Finished my ride yesterday, 100 miles exactly, HRM said I had burnt about 5200 calories (don't know how accurate these HRM's are at calculating calories!!)

I thought I was ingesting loads of calories on the bike but I went through my caloric intake for that ride:

4 EAS gels at 292 cals per gel
1 Chocolate bar at 250
1 nutrigrain bar at about 145

That amount to about 1600 calories, I don't take a sports drink and only use water.

That puts me in in a massive negative balance, should I be ingesting more calories than this or does everyone only take about this much!?!?

Is taking in only this much setting me up for a nightmare run?

Cheers guys

Tim

Those numbers look good to me.
A negative balance is always expected, your body can process only so much calories while you can easily burn much more that you can process.

A general rule of thumb for me, if I'm riding 2hrs+ is to make sure to gel once an hour and to drink a good portion of my accelerade every 15min (about 1/4 - 1/5 the bottle)(although, living in Texas, my drinking interval can fluctuate quite a bit depending on the temperature)

You can really only replace about 30% of what you burn..the body simply couldn't use it all if you shoveled it in...and you'd be left with gastro problems, bloating or worse.
If your HRM is calibrated correctly...it should be close to spot on calorie wise.

Which gels are these? I've only seen 100 cal per serving, and they hardly seem worth choking down to me.

Thanks for the info guys, was just worried I wasn't fueling correctly but now my mind has been put at rest!!

Pete, these gels are called 'Energy Gel' from EAS. I have used them before and find the flavour alright and have never had any problem with bloating or gastro upset so continue to use them. Each sachet is 100g, which provides 292 cals, I do however split up a sachet into two, so I have half on the hour and another half at half past the hour.
