what is the best way to get better at running? by better i mean able to run for longer at a higher pace. is the trick just racking up the miles like on the bike?

at this point i can comfortably run 6-7 miles in roughly an hour's time. i would like to work my way eventually to a half IM and then on to a full IM within a couple of years.

any advice for a novice runner?

Best thing about running is that if you're patient at it, you can't help but get better. Log as many miles as you can but make sure they are all aerobic. You can do this with a HR monitor or just go off perceived exertion. Always come back knowing you could have gone faster. If you start going anaerobic like I did when I first started, your body will break down. For an explanation of this, get an Arthur Lydiard book from the library or take a look at this link.

Volume of miles is a component to be able to run a 1/2 marathon and a marathon at a relatively fast pace. Following a structured plan that incorporates tempo runs, some speedwork, hills, long runs, medium long runs, and easy days will really improve your speed and endurance.

Plans can be found at the Running Times site, Runners World site, as well as many others like the above link. Good luck.

thanks for the tips! i will take it slow and try to avoid hurting myself (been there and it sucks when you are forced to take it easy)
