Just wanted to get some people's opinions on what they do for bike nutrition for training. There is always plenty of threads on what we do during races, but very few about training.

Personally if it is an hour or more I eat an Clif bar or similiar within the first 20 minutes and go loaded with my profile design bottle on my aero bars full with a spare water bottle. Depending on how I feel I usually end up taking a gel after about an hour.

On rides over 2 1/2 hours I try to eat at least something every 30 minutes and go out with the aero bar bottle and two full spares.

One gel every 45 min or so. Water whenever I'm thirsty, Gatorade/water mix if it's hot. This means about a bottle an hour for cooler/rainy weather, up to three bottles an hour in hot weather.

Long rides will have a convenience store fig newton box and some pretzels during the break.

My training nutrition is the same as my racing nutrition. For the longer distances, it's good to train the way you race. I don't want there to be a possiblity that my nutrition won't work on race day.

The only real difference between training rides and racing is that for training I'm carrying it all with me - and timing a stop about 3 hours in to get more water - some for mixing in with Gatorade powder. Training is where you dial in your race day nutrition plan.

I tend to eat a wide variety of things on the bike from gels to pop tarts (gels are expensive and if I want to afford race entry fees then its gotta come from somewhere). Also it allows me to intake a wide variety of things if I need to on race day.

90 minutes and under: a gel if i am going to Brick or something afterwards.

Longer ride: gels every 45 minutes or so.

I always pack 2 waterbottles with Gatorade for all distances, as a just in case thing. Longer rides I will carry a ziplock baggie with more Gatorade powder to mix with water from rest stops.

Life is short. Play hard and get dirty doing it.

Anything under an hour i just take a bottle of Cytomax. Over an hour I take 2 or more bottles and a gel every 45 minutes. Usually don;t do very much solid food until after I'm finished.
