Don´t drink and train
At least you knew who the bed belonged to. Hell, at least it was bed....not a bench in downtown Playa (what happens in Mexico stays in Mexico?) or standing up against the men's room stall at the Tri-Delt social (not me!! just someone I know...Mexico was me, though). Just remember....it could be plenty worse.

Being Canadian I would chock your experience up to the guacamole, no way it was the beer ;)
Well, I am certainly well renowned for enjoying a nice cocktail or beer upon occassion and have never felt any adverse training effects from moderation....but....Two days after IMAZ, I decided to have a glass or 2....maybe 3, of wine while making diner. It was freakin' Tuesday afternoon, around 5pm. So I 'm having all this fun in my kitchen and the next thing I know.....I AM HAMMERED!!!! Like, "Oh, my God, I'm wasted like a chick on prom night!" drunk. I managed to make it through dinner and then passed out on the coach until my wife made me go to bed at 7pm. I was soo hung over the next day, it was laughable! It wasn't alarmed, I just realized that I was still probably under caloired and under hydrated and had lost all semblence of tolerence for booze prior to IM (although I still would have a few beer duting the week or weekend).

Of course it's 'effing hard, it's IRONMAN!
1.5hrs after my IMC '05 finsish I was sitting on my hotel deck with two guys from Kansas (finishers as well ) and polished off 3 Guinness, They were drinking rum and cokes as we celebrated the day - note - there must be electrolytes in Guinness because I had no ill effects the next day! :)
^^^Darker beer has more antioxidants. Even though it has more calories, it's actually much better for you than American piss-water (aka Bud, Coors, Mich, etc). At least that's the rationale I give myself on Friday nights.

Well...guys...booze and trainning...
I posted once a comment on this, from a medical point of view...
But the thing is pretty much simple as...
When we excercise...particulary us, endurance athletes, we put our kidneys to work harder that the regular joe...and at some point, we might be dehydrated.
So if we add booze no matter what kind...we are making work our kidneys really hard...and since making us even more dehydrated...
Is nice to enjoy a beer, a glass of wine every once in a while...not much of a taste for cocktail myself...
But the rule is...if you drink...try to have at least the same amount of water of what you drink....so, you won´t dehydrate, and you will pee out...that will keep your head ok...and your kidneys flushed...
When I advice patients or fellow athletes...this is a topic I really love to talk about

What I found works for me (even though I barely drink anymore) is to drink a glass of bloody mary mix (tomato juice, lemon, salt, pepper and worshceterst-whetever sauce) for every drink I take.
Another thing I have noticed is that my ability to "stomach" drinks has been greatly reduced. I used to be able to put shame upon an Irish man, but lately, a couple of drinks ahve really been knocking my head round.
Could just be getting old. i knew college athletes (good ones) who would train very hard for 2-3 hours and then go pound a case of busch later that day. obviously, not the smartest thing to do but it did not seem to have terrible effects on their training. i know that my ability to go out with the boys and wake up the next morning to workout has gone down severe in the past couple of years.
I know a very fast runner (can't drop names for obvious reasons) who smokes like Cheech & Chong and manages to win anyway. I'm sure you know guys like that up in Ann Arbor, though. Is it true that Ann Arbor only has like a $25 fine for posession? Not that it would make a difference to me....I can't even smell a cigarette without feeling sick.

Some athlets are just blessed with God given talent and they can perform at "high" levels...no pun intended. The #2 overall pick in the NFL draft, Calvin Johnson, admitted that he smokes marijuana on a regular basis. Not all of us can be elite athletes let alone smoke bud and do it. What are you going to do?! I guess you do what works for you.

Um....no. The dude confessed to having smoked pot in the ast- not that he was some kind of pot head. Dont spread misinformation or make assumptions based on some tidbit that wasnt even supposed to be public. From SI:
"No one should get too worked up over the report on Pro Football Weekly's Web site that says top draft prospects Calvin Johnson, Gaines Adams and Amobi Okoye admitted during team interviews at February's NFL Combine that they have used marijuana at some point in the past."
Life is short. Play hard and get dirty doing it.
I had a glass of Sangria at a friend's birthday party the evening after my first ever tri. I had to stop halfway through cause I was getting just... a little... tipsy. I felt like a dork.
I will have a drink or MAYBE two the night before a race to help me sleep well, but try to avoid the booze in excessive amounts. all things in moderation. Good thing about that is that a six pack can last me a week... or at least two nights.

I cannot speak personally for the lack of law enforcement when it comes to poking smot. I can speak personally for the amazingly quick response time when it comes to your parking meter running over by a few minutes though. yes, i do believe that the fine for being caught with a small amount of marijuana is pretty much a slap on the wrist. although the famed "hash bash" has pretty much gone down the tubes. it has become a reason for 50 year old hippies to come out and smoke weed.

interesting thing about alcohol and making you sleep. when you have a few drinks you fall asleep quickly and feel like you have slept like a rock, no? however, if you look at the sleep cycles of people who have had alcohol compared to those who have not, the people who were drinking actually have a much more restless sleep (tossing/turning, waking up more, etc.) (this partly explains why you are tired and feel like crap after you have had too much to drink). this probably does not happen with only a few drinks, but i thought it was interesting when i first saw the numbers.

Guiness has fewer calories than a Budwieser, in addition to just being better tasting. A 12 ounce Guinesss has about 125 calories where a Budweiser has about 143. Guiness has only 16 more calories than a Coors Light - and there isn't really much comparison in taste there.
If your really going for some flavor try a Double IPA.

Everything in moderation... I drank after IM AZ and I was hammered (2 long islands :) ) but then again it was after the IM and I didn't care anymore. I do smoke cigars as well every now and then but it is maybe once or twice a month. I couldn't imagine being a pothead like one guy I know (no names) and still even functioning every day. Different people have different things that work or don't work for them.
One of the best IPAs I tasted was a micro from Henry's Tavern in Portland last summer. Hmmm time for a road trip I think!

Guinness also has a little less alcohol than Budweiser. People describe it as a heavy beer but in actuality it's one of the lighter (alcohol wise) beers out there. Guinness is a good beer to choose when you don't want to get too buzzed. Chances are you'll be full way before you start doing anything stupid.

Still not as good as Chimay Blue.

This ultra-runner/biologist/writer has some interesting ideas on carbohydrate drinks (or did). His research was done prior to the advent of gatorade and he tried cranberry juice and beer, among others as ultra-running fuel.
He ended up setting a few records. But I'm pretty sure he's ruled out beer as an ergogenic aid.

Last year, I ruled out alcohol from my diet and found that when I did drink again, I was incredibly sensitive to booze.
I could have 3-4 beers and carry on just fine before.
Today, I have 1 and I'll feel the buzz by the time I'm halfway done.
It just means I'm a cheap drunk now and honestly I enjoy this new standard of moderation.
Coming from an Austrian background and drinking with the family since my teen years I always was able to put it away ("Here...have another liter! )
Any more, I'm on the floor with deepblue after one or two....I have to say I sort of like it that way...
Age is probably a factor,too....although I won't pass up the HHH beer table at Marathons!

A Double IPA is a style of beer rather than a brand. Chimay blue is a dark belgian ale, but without a doubt a very good choice with a interesting history.

I am more into darker ales than the whole cool IPA thing. I really like Ambers and Coppers. Fat Tire Copper is goooood stuff.

Ill have to try the Fat Tire if i see any out this way! Sounds good

fat tire is one of the best beers on earth, maybe my favorite.

So Yesterday I had a 3,000m swim session followed by a Recovery bike of 1 hour and a 55min run at Zone 2. Almost 3 hours of training for this recovery week sunday.
Everything was ok until my wife and I went to my sister in law´s birthday party. I thought " well tomorrow is my recovery day maybe I can have a beer or two"
They had clamato and michelada mix so I made myself a nice michelada with 1 beer. But the big mistake was not leaving it in just 1 beer. I ended up drinking 4 beers.
I know 4 beers isn´t that much but OHHHH MY GOD. I was stupid enough to think that I didn´t need to eat that much. I ended up eating 1 1/2 tortillas with beef and guacamole. It was more as a companion dish for my beer than actually lunch.
Next thing I remember it was 7:15pm and I was sleeping in my mother in law´s bed (alone!!! THANK GOD!) Don´t even know how I got there.:(
The last drink I had was for New Year´s eve, so I´m guessing I lost practice, had a very bad lunch and the fact that I had trained for 3 hours led into disaster.
I feel so stupid today! I have been taking good care of my body and yesterday I did something that was somewhat dangerous and needless to say.....I´m paying the price today
What I really want to say is be careful if you decide to have a drink and are into heavy training. I ended up yesterday week 4 of my 20 week 70.3 Mark Allen training plan. It was damn scary what happened yesterday. (I know it might be a funny story but believe me it´s not funny not knowing how you ended up taking a nap on someone else's bed:( )
