Collegiate Tri Nationals 07
Nice job making your goal, the only way to go is up, enjoy yourself and don't get too addicted ;) . By the way the guy that was first out of the water was Dustin McLarty in 15:32, he swims for Florida, and has gone 15:31 in the 1650, or about 56.4 for 16 hundreds in a row.
Just curious if you guys heard anything about people skipping the last buoy during the swim.
heard it on the grapevine

Awesome job, AZStinger!
One of my buddies was in the chase pack and is pretty sure that they missed the bouy. I know I didn't miss it because I swam right up onto the thing. I doubt they were trying to cut the course- the majority of the swim was into the sun, which made sighting a bit difficult.

The course was a bit short, but he's still crazy fast in the water (good genes...Sarah's crazy fast, too). Yesterday he was first out in the Am-Elite wave at St. Anthony's in 17:10. The fastest pro was 17:20. Brian Fleischmann and Matt Reed went 17:26 and 17:29.

Not fast enough.
yes a lot of people in the first pack of swimmers did miss the first buoy but no one got any penalaties or d/q'd for it, which personally I think is fine. Our swim coach thought the swim course was a bit short to but apparnetly a few people went out there and used GPS and it was infact the correct length or so short that it didn't matter

Not trying to get on your case or anything, but i'd like to hear your thoughts behind this.
If the folks who missed the bouy are not penalized then it is the people who did make it to that last bouy that are ultimately penalized for following the course.

Yeah i was thinking the course was a bit short. 15:32 is a fast pool 1500, and open water its pretty insane. If the course was marked correctly for a 1500 he probably missed a bouy. 17:10 (hey im only 35 sec off :))is a more realistic time for an open water 1500.
Eh, the first wave had to deal with alot of lame crap. The Mayor didn't have a loud voice, and when he said "GO" the first wave froze, and nobody went. So then the crowd yelled GO and off they went. Alabama had to learn a few things! 1) The green bouy was pointless, swim there, then swim to the kayak...HMMM OK. 2) No bottle exchange on the bike was kinda blah, but oh well. All in all it was a good race, the people (and women) in Alabama are great! ;p

HaHa swim to the kayak....did the other waves go through that buisness too?
Alabama was beautiful, at least compared to michigan where we had snow not 6 days before the race.

I don't think the swim course was all that short. Being a National Championship and run by USAT, I highly doubt that there would be a large inaccuracy. Also, from looking at his time it seems like McClarty hauled on the swim and didn't leave much else for the rest of the race- He ran a 47... Skipping the bouy probably saved the lead pack 30sec or so. When you get 130 testosterone-charged college guys all thinking they can win it's going to be fast.

No, the other waves (well, at least mine) didn't have to deal with that. I kept wondering why they had everyone sit out there in the water for so long like they did.
This is just hearsay, but I have been told that the bullhorn had been left out over night and had gotten wet so it was not working too well.

He's hurt. He ran a 40 on Sunday at St. Anthony's though.

3rd wave did. I treated it like a crit start...race to the line before the race. I heard it was pretty nasty in the middle of the pack, so I was glad that I got to sit towards the front.

One of the groups was forced to swim back to the missed buoy (which I do not think is right since it added that much more to the course when others weren't penalized at all). But as to why I don't think it's a big deal, probably because I do triathlons to push myself and my own boundaries and If I happen to do well enough to win something then great if not I still won at least in my own mind. So as long as I can say I went out there and pushed myself hard and had fun then I don't really care if someone got out of the water 20 seconds ahead of me b/c their group skipped a buoy its on their conscious not mine. I will admit I can see why this could aggravate some more competitively minded triathletes though.

Firstly i'd like to thank everyone here as well as everyone on my team for helping me discover this amazing sport and letting me accomplish things that I never thought I'd be capable. This is my last race this season, but what a first season (1st race ever was a half marathon that i got 2nd in my ag, followed by a duathlon, then a aquathlon, sprint tri, 1st Olympic (lake havasu), and this final capstone race).
The day before the race our team does a nice easy bike ride scoping out some of the bike and run course, and test the waters. Much to my dismay I discover that glass + bike tires = bad, so I have to buy 2 brand new tires, great there goes the change nothing race day idea. Oh well.
Race day:
A few of my teammates and I decide to bike to the transition area from our hotel and it is a beautiful ride in the cool Alabama morning. I get to transition area and this is the first race I've been in where slots are assigned and there are these board things that hold a wheel instead of the usual handle bar racks, but no big deal. Reaching for my googles which were the last thing in my bag they get caught on something inside and strap snaps, OH @#%! I frantically start asking teammates if they have a extra and luckily someone did (lesson learned bring 2 pairs from now on). I get my wetsuit on and get near the entrance to the lake. I see the first wave take off and the lead swimmer finish (who finished the swim in 15:?? low though very low). Ok its my turn, don't freak out is pretty much the only thing i can think about. I'm pleasantly surprised by the water temp, and swim out to the start area. When our wave starts I take it easy hanging out in the back of the pack remembering that in my last Oly distance I felt like I was going to drown about half way through. But the further I get in the swim the more I realize hey wait a minute i'm fine, and im actually passing people! So for the last half of the swim I kick it up a notch (for me atleast) and exit the swim 29:21. T1 goes well and I have no major issues and im out on the bike course. Unfortunately I'm really slow on the bike but the for me it goes quite well, I feel like I make good time and maintain good nutrition out there. At T2 I was almost way and then I remembered i forgot to get anything to drink so I turn around really quick before I leave (which probably cost me 20-30sec =( ). The run course was great with only one set of hills I wasn't expecting. At my last tri I had to walk 50-60% of the run due my back seizing up and that was thankfully not present this race! The hardest hill on the course at about mile 3 on the run course was tough but great, I got a little to eager on attacking one section and was forced to walk for a few minutes, but was back at it soon. The run finished on the heart of the U of Alabama campus which was just great.
All in all my best tri ever and as always I learned a ton! For me its the off season but I plan on biking a lot to try and develop those muscles and techniques better. My goal was sub 3 hours and was able to beat that and from there I only plan on improving. The best part of this race was the sense of comradely, no matter what team people were from they were always cheering on people, it was just truly amazing. The afterparty was great too but I think thats for a different forum =p
