This is, somwhat, in response to a topic I read about the benefits.downside to drinking milk.
I can't handle lactose at all, so my question is the following...
Is soy milk a good drink to consider while training for a triathlon? If so, when is it the most effective (sporadic drinking, pre-workout, recovery drink, etc...)

Thank you

i live on soy, i can do dairy but i tend to work better when im running on soy. i find it works best most of the time but especially in recovery drinks.
i find dairy bloats me and leaves me feeling a bit "greasy", soy just feels cleaner in my body, its a personal thing. try it for a week or 2 and see how you progress.

Though I too can handle dairy, I use soy a lot – I prefer it in my muesli for pre-workout/race, with fruit and supplement mix for my recovery immediately after workouts, in my coffee, for a post dinner treat, etc. – I find it to be tastier than milk and actually crave it. One thing to consider is that some people do react adversely to soy. My mother-in-law used to use it regularly because she can’t do dairy, but over time she found that she developed an allergy to it which manifest itself with itchy hives and shortness of breath to name a few symptoms. She now stays away from it totally.

I have always been curious about soy milk, but never been willing to try it. From the sounds of this thread it is something I should consider.

Does anyone know the actual health benefits and costs to switching. Also what does it taste like compared to cow milk. :)

About the performance benefits, I can;t really help you, but as a true glutton, I'll give you the "low-down" ;) on the taste.
Pretty much depends on the brand. SILK soy milk tastes pretty good (specially the vainilla flavored one.) The only way I could try to describe soy milk's taste is that of milk, except less fat-tasting and a sliiiight hint of mint (it's tough to describe). When you eat it with cereal or coffee (I havent tried it with anythign else) you can't feel the difference.

As far as taste - soy milk has a much "stronger" flavor than milk. In other words, cow's milk tastes like water once you get used to the taste of soy milk.

The major benefit to me is the most obvious one - it's lactose free. It does cost a lot more than dairy milk though - maybe double.

I love soy. I have a glass pre-training and use it on my cereal for recovery. I dont drink or eat dairy products at all.

I buy the non-genetically modified soy or the organic soy. I think it just tastes nutty.

Nayo, I think it is just as beneficial as milk depending on whether you get low fat or full fat.

I am also lactose intolerant and have completely switched over to drinking soy (instead of Lactaid) and now can't even stand the taste of regular milk. I agree that soy has a nutty taste. I also like it as a recovery drink. My favorite is Organic Valley chocolate soy milk, although I'm finding it tough to find around here lately. I also buy the soy creamer (plain) for my coffee. And I use vanilla soy in my cereal. I'm not sure about the health benefits vs. milk (similiar maybe? I haven't researched it enough). As for cost, I find it's similar in cost to Lactaid or any lactose-free milks, which aren't cheap compared to regular milk.

yeah nutty is the best way to describe it. It makes that post training hot chocolate have an almost "hazelnut flavour" truly GOLD!

Costco even sells Organic Soy in bulk. Best tasting soy I've tried and of course, it's cheap. Whole Foods has Soy Ice Cream, btw....

I haven't tried the soy ice cream. Is it good? I'll have to stop by and pick some up this weekend! I haven't had ice cream in years.......
