As I am sure you all know because I have been very vocal about it :) I finished IM AZ a week ago. I ran a 10K race over the weekend and I really REALLY REALLY pushed myself (206 max heart rate with an average over 190.) The sad thing is still ran a minute a mile slower then I normally do (6 months ago before I started my IM training). Yesterday I went out for a 4 mile that I was just going to see how fast I could do it. I ran redicuosly slow no matter how hard I tried. What's the deal did I wait too long or not long enough have I lost my speed?

Take a break! Your body (and your mind) needs time to recover. You won't lose fitness after a little layoff, you just finished an IRONMAN. You have developed a huge base. Resting now will help you get faster later...

My friend, I know its difficult to stop training since that's been all you've been doing for the last several months, but that's what you need to do right now. If you don't allow your body time to recover, then you're risking blowing the rest of your season (taken from personal experience) and a possible injury. Its OK to take some time off...you're in great shape, and as you slowly get back into training, you'll see that you've lost very litte. Be good to your body ;)

Go back and read the post-race section of Going Long (might be in the Triathlete's Training Bible too). Racing a 10k 1 week out was not a good idea. Consider abandoning the run altogether for a while starting today. Bike easy, swim easy, walk easy, BUT DON'T RUN.

J...buddy... relax. It will be all ok. Despite what you may think...you have really smacked yourself at Ironman. You may not feel right for weeks and may experience an inner tiredness that effects all your workouts for awhile. I have met pros who do NOTHING the week after an IM then gradually work their way back to full steam in about three weeks....sort of a reverse taper. Be smart here. Going full force now, can slam you even farther into your boots and could lead to injury...PJT is spot on.
Be careful out there.

Hey thanks for the advice I will hit the bike today and take it easy like only a 45 minute ride at a relaxed pace. I just got all scared that I couldn't run fast at all no matter how hard I tried.

IN ALL THAT IS HOLY JOSH!!! What are you doing?!! OK, I want to you to make a note to yourself that says, "Before doing anything boneheaded traithlon related, I will ask on TriFuel first..." ;)
Seriously, let me give you my last week. I swam for 30min on Wed. and Thursday. I did a 30min ride around town on Thursday. I rode for 1 hour on Friday. I ran for 38 min on Staurday and 48 min on Sunday with my wife and dogs at around a 10:55 pace. I took yesterday off. That's it, no mas. This week I will continue to be active, NOT TRAINING, doing some more riding and running, no heart rate monitor, just getting out and having fun. You need to let your fitness fall off for a few weeks.

Ya, dude, even "I" king of overtraining have just rode to work slowly once last week cause I felt good. I did nothing over the weekend and started riding to work in Base yesterday. I did just yesterday after work run my first 5km at unbelievable slow speed and I swam last Wed. w the kids but just as a goof around. Take the time off and for a week do nothing. If you DO go and do something do it very slow.

Additctive stuff though huh? :D

I thought you were the King of Canada? :D

Anyway,

J,
as previously stated,
you have to get some rest and recover smart.

I recommend some ice baths immediately after, and some major relaxation and easy rides, swims and runs.

Nothing to it, but to do it

So just how bad did you feel for the 10K? I signed up for a local race series that has a swim (2 weeks ago) a bike in July a run in September and a x-country ski in December. They then take your combined time. I was counting on a top 10 finish and had a good swim then realized the run, a 5 mile race, is the Saturday after IMWI. OUCH.... I figured I will just show up and see what happens, but am dreading how much it's gonna probably hurt!

The sadest thing is I can't even blame any enabler's I do this on my own and every one of my family members think I am neurotic for getting into this sport... Oh well I am now sick as a dog and I am hoping to get better. Tomorrow it will be a nice long walk with the wife to get my legs moving again.

After the 10k I was hurtin bad. I have never excertied (sp?) myself that much in any event. Granted I was exhausted like I never have been before after IMAZ but I didn't push myself to failure on that one. If you don't push yourself you will be ok. Just don't be a Josh...

Can we revist this...? After IMA, we vacationed in Austria for another 10 days (yahoo!). We hiked and mountain biked (downhill, my friends, downhill) No more climbing for me for awhile  and no running!

Anyway, of course, I'm getting antsy. I went on a short "jog" Saturday and today (two weeks after IMA). This week I'll get in the water and back on the bike. I'll keep my workouts under an hour for awhile.

But my question is this: when can I get back in the weight room? I totally miss lifting, and feel like I've lost some muscle mass. What are your thoughts?

I learned the hard way but just take it easy and go at 50% throttle then 75% then back to 100%. Just don't hammer it right from the start.
