knee and calf question

Last week I had an hour+ run and at about the 50 minute mark my left knee gave me severe pain out of nowhere, no build up, nothing. It is a kind of pain that almost felt like it needed to pop but more extreme. I took almost a week off after that out of fear. tonight was my first run since then. (no issues when swimming or riding) and it happened after a half hour. Its a strange pain that I can only feel when weight or pressure is applied to it. If anyone has any advice I would appreciate it. I have added glucosomine to my supplements but it hasnt seemed to have an effect.

Second issue, I have been doing long distance racing and training for a few years now, but recently I have noticed that my calves tend to hurt a lot more than usual and a lot sooner. I am almost wondering if these two are linked, but any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks a lot!

Go to an orthopedist for your knees

It sounds like your ITB is acting up. Have you been increasing speed or doing a lot of hills lately? Old shoes? Be careful with your knees though see a DR/Physio to rule anything more serious out.

As for the calves what kind of pain? Acute or a dull ache, I find my calves get cramped a few hours after long runs and have been getting massages more regularly to relieve the pressure. More stretching and ensuring you are taking in adequate electrolytes culd relieve some of your pain. Are you also getting adequate rest between workouts?

+1 for IT, but you'll need to see a doctor (or better yet, sports PT) to be sure. Glucosamine pretty much just reduces your chances of arthritis, but a sudden pain like that is more than likely soft tissue. With ITBS, your hamstring or quad overdevelops in comparison to the other, causing the IT band to be pulled out of its normal position. This will cause the kneecap to be pulled slightly out of position as well, and this off-tracking will cause some funny rubbing inside the knee, even though the injury is actually in a different spot. Where exactly is the pain? What does it feel like?

the pain is difficult to place but I would say more at the center of my knee. and it feels very sharp. When it does hurt it makes it physically impossible to continue running. I can walk fine, but the second I pick up the pace it hurts like nothing else.

Almost exactly what my knee was doing in January, fromt he sounds of it. For me the diagnosis was the ITB...in conjunction with a bit of lower back imbalance.

I'd strongly add to the suggestion of seeing a sports doc.

The calves could be connected as you're likely slightly changing your running form and even walking form from your ITB, even if not consciously, but impossible to say over the net.

Center of knee sounds more like PFS (patello-femoral syndrome), which can be caused by imbalances in the quadriceps muscles. See my post here on trifuel called "The Definitive ITBS Guide." It may help you gain additional insight into your current issue, but as others have said, go see someone to ensure it's not something much worse.

If you DO have PFS, you'll need physical therapy to get a strength assessment and prescription for how to change it.

Good luck!

thanks for the info, I have gone to my chiro. Still taking time off from running to let it heal, but hopefully it will be better.
